Field Engineer

Are you highly organized, power-certified, and skilled at working independently in the field? Do you enjoy hands-on technical work that keeps essential infrastructure running smoothly? IdeaTek is looking for a Field Engineer to join our team and play a critical role in maintaining and turning up fiber-connected cabinets and colocation sites across Kansas.

In this role, you’ll help bring our fiber infrastructure to life—installing and maintaining environmental systems, powering equipment, and supporting the physical reliability of our growing network. From working inside climate-controlled co-location buildings to maintaining remote cabinets, you’ll be out in the field every day, helping keep Kansas connected.

What You'll Do

Key responsibilities include:

Cabinet & Site Maintenance

• Perform interior and exterior maintenance and repairs at cabinet sites
• Inspect, clean, and test AC units, propane tanks, and batteries
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues involving HVAC, breakers, batteries, and generators
• Maintain surrounding areas, including mowing, trimming, and general site upkeep
• Coordinate generator service and maintenance
  
  

Installations & Equipment Turnups

• Assist in planning and preparing new cabinet and co-location (co-lo) sites
• Conduct site surveys and install environmental and network equipment
• Wire and test AC units, batteries, and generators to ensure system readiness
• Turn up new cabinets and co-lo locations in coordination with network engineers
• Participate in scheduled and emergency network maintenance as needed
  
  

Documentation

• Maintain accurate records, including test results, repair logs, and network configurations
• Keep fiber plant and network documentation up to date after each site visit

• Previous telecom or fiber infrastructure experience
• Experience working with network cabinet design, layout, and fiber/co-lo equipment turnups

A Day in the Life

You’ll start your day on the road, either heading to a scheduled cabinet or co-location site or responding to a maintenance issue. You’ll inspect and maintain AC units, batteries, and propane systems—or prep new cabinets for turnup by installing and wiring equipment. Some days, you’ll mow or trim the area around the cabinet to keep the site clean and accessible. Other days, you’ll be deep into wiring, documenting, or coordinating generator maintenance.

At night, you may be scheduled for maintenance between midnight and 5 AM. You’ll plan your week for a mix of day and night work, always staying flexible and keeping your truck stocked and ready. What We're Looking For

To be considered for this role, you'll need the following required qualifications:

• Power experience (AC/DC systems, batteries, generators, etc.)
• Valid driver’s license with no restrictions
• Ability to work independently in the field
• Strong attention to detail, especially in documentation and organization
• Physical ability to perform cabinet work and travel regularly throughout Kansas
• Willingness to work a mix of day and night hours based on scheduled night maintenance windows
• Ability to travel in the state of Kansas
