Duties
- Prepare patients for catheterization procedures by conducting thorough assessments, explaining the process, and ensuring informed consent is obtained.
- Assist physicians during cardiac catheterizations, angiograms, stent placements, and other interventional procedures with aseptic technique and precise equipment handling.
- Monitor vital signs, oxygen saturation, and cardiac rhythms continuously using advanced EMR (Electronic Medical Record) systems such as Epic or Cerner to ensure patient stability throughout procedures.
- Administer medications including sedatives, analgesics, and contrast agents like iodine-based dyes used in diagnostic imaging such as CT scans or sonography.
- Manage patient recovery post-procedure by observing for complications like bleeding or arrhythmias, providing pain management, and educating patients on post-care instructions including wound care and medication administration.
- Maintain sterile environment protocols during invasive procedures to prevent infection control issues; perform catheter care and specimen collection as needed.
- Document all nursing interventions accurately in medical records, ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations and NCQA standards for quality care.
Qualifications
- Valid RN license with current registration in the state of practice.
- Proven experience in cardiac catheterization labs or interventional radiology settings; critical care experience strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems such as Epic or Cerner; proficiency in ICD coding and documentation is a plus.
- Knowledge of physiology related to cardiovascular anatomy and diagnostic evaluation techniques including Doppler ultrasound or sonography.
- Ability to perform IV insertion, venipuncture, suturing, and aseptic technique confidently.
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities or complex health needs such as memory care or long-term care experience is advantageous.
- Strong assessment skills with the ability to recognize acute pain management needs or emergency situations like trauma medicine or Level I trauma center protocols.
