Job Description

Operate mobile heavy equipment/machinery such as road grader, bulldozer, loaders, trackhoe/backhoe, paddle scrapper, mobile canes, semi-trucks, tractor-trailer combinations, tanker trucks, and forklifts.

Essential Job Functions And Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment related to maintenance and repair of roads, grounds, and landfill, construction, and maintenance of facilities, and in support of programs and projects to enable science.
  • Operate hoisting and rigging equipment and perform rigging tackle inspections per DOE STD 1090.
  • Operate overhead cranes and mobile cranes. Perform load testing of mobile cranes.
  • Operate and transport equipment and loads to fulfill INL mission and objectives.
  • Build knowledge, perform tasks under OJT instruction, and qualify for tasks for completion of individual job code in the work discipline.
  • Read and interpret drawings and sketches proficiently. Review scope with customers to help define job requirements, offer recommendations for improving product outcome. Provide status on jobs in progress to project managers and management. Resolve problems and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain craft-specific equipment.
  • Operate pre-operational checks on equipment to ensure proper functioning, including inspecting hydraulics, fluid levels, and control panels.
  • Maintain all equipment, facility, safety, and other qualifications (training) as directed.
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices by keeping work areas clean and organized.
  • Perform administrative recordkeeping and documentation of work activities.
  • Make recommendations to supervisor/manager on methods to improve operations.
  • Utilize the principles and best practices of Conduct of Maintenance and Conduct of Operations in all work assignments.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledgeable in labor specific tools and materials including material handling equipment and operations.
  • Support and use the established Integrated Safety Management System principles to ensure work is conducted safely and meets the requirements for Safety, Health and Environmental.
  • Knowledgeable of emergency action policies and procedures, methods of reporting and resolving unsafe work practices and conditions and utilizing available cognizant professionals.
  • Ability to perform the essential job functions consistently safely and successfully with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Ability to work extended periods of time in Radiological work areas including wearing the required Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) (Respiratory protection etc.).
  • Ability to work in hazardous locations such as confined spaces, use required Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to perform work in accordance with all applicable laws, codes, procedures, and safety requirements.

Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have four years Equipment Operator (EO) experience.
  • Maintain a Class "A" Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with a T, H, N endorsement.
  • Must be a US Citizen and have the ability and willingness to obtain and maintain a DOE "L" security clearance.
  • Must be able to operate various types of equipment without restrictions.
  • NCCCO Certification is strongly preferred.

Special Required Certifications/Qualifications

  • May be required to qualify as a RAD Worker.
  • Must be willing to become qualified as a rigger as required in DOE STD 1090 for operating Hoisting and Rigging Equipment.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, climb ladders, work at heights, and in confined spaces. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires the operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with the public is required. Working Conditions

The work environment includes an office, buildings, and a field environment. The field environment may include exposure to adverse weather, working in high traffic areas, potential exposure to radiation work, hazardous chemicals/waste, and noisy and/or loud equipment. Field work may include working with hazards involving the use of ladders, stairs, confined spaces, power tools and equipment which subjects the employee to mechanical and electrical hazards, moving vehicles, and heavy equipment. Varied work locations may expose incumbent to extreme temperatures and UV (sun) exposure. Position requires the use of protective clothing and respirator as needed. Position requires irregular hours/overtime, shifts greater than 8 hours/day, and working alone.

Job Information

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Heavy Equipment Operator to work on our IRC team. Our team works a 9x80 schedule located out of our Idaho Falls facility with every other Friday off.

  • The pay range for this position is: HEO ($48.42) / HEO NCCCO ($49.20). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials. Rates are accurate for current posting and subject to change. This is a bargaining unit position.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
