Summary:

The Mission of the Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC) is to create a model correctional system that provides equitable access to programming and opportunities that reflect community experience, foster connections, and restore victims of crime. IDOC is seeking a highly professional and collaborative Sentencing Supervisor to lead the Sentencing Records unit within the Transparency team of the Management Services Division located at the Central office in Boise, Idaho. This position provides leadership, operational oversight, and technical guidance for a team responsible for sentence administration and sentence computation for individuals committed to the custody of IDOC.

The successful candidate will foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement while ensuring sentence calculations and related processes are accurate, legally compliant, and consistently applied statewide. This position requires excellent supervisory, coaching, and communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to build trust, navigate difficult conversations, and manage competing priorities within a complex and highly regulated environment. This role serves as a key partner to courts, legal staff, correctional leaders, and other stakeholders and contributes directly to public safety, organizational integrity, and confidence in the department’s sentence administration processes. As a member of the Transparency leadership team, the Sentencing Supervisor also supports division-wide priorities, collaborates across business units, and contributes to the operational consistency and continuous improvement throughout the organization.

Responsibilities:

1. Provide direct supervision, leadership, coaching, and performance management for Sentencing Records staff.
2. Foster a professional, respectful, and collaborative work environment that promotes accountability, trust, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
3. Establish clear expectations, provide regular feedback, and address employee performance and conduct issues in a timely and effective manner.
4. Oversee sentence administration processes and sentence calculations to ensure compliance with applicable laws, court orders, policies, and procedures.
5. Provide guidance and decision-making support on complex sentencing issues and legal interpretations.
6. Monitor workload distribution, staffing needs, and operational performance to ensure timely and accurate completion of work.
7. Coordinate with courts, prosecutors, defense attorneys, parole officials, correctional staff, and other stakeholders to resolve sentencing-related issues.
8. Review operational processes, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement solutions that increase efficiency, consistency, and accuracy.
9. Analyze trends, recurring issues, and operational risks and develop recommendations for management.
10. Develop staff knowledge and technical expertise through training, mentoring, and succession planning.
11. Lead special projects, policy implementation efforts, and operational initiatives impacting sentencing services and Transparency operations.
12. Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Your resume needs to clearly articulate how your skills, education and experience meet the qualifications below –

1. Good knowledge of sentencing laws and offender movement through an incarceration system. Typically gained through upper division college coursework in criminal justice that covered resident movement through the system; OR approximately one year of experience working in the criminal justice field.
2. Some knowledge of supervision. Typically gained by completion of a training class or seminar (8 or more hours, e.g., pre-supervisor) specifically covering supervisory practices AND at least 6 months of full-time work experience that involved work assignment, direction, and monitoring of staff, OR at least 1 year of lead-work or supervisory experience that involved work assignment, direction, and monitoring of staff. Supervision of incarcerated individuals does NOT qualify.
3. Experience reviewing information for compliance with laws and regulations. Typically gained through approximately one year of work experience where this was an assigned job duty. (Note: college-level courses in business law, criminal justice administration, etc., may qualify at this level).
4. Experience explaining the cause and effect between laws, regulations, and policies to others. Typically gained through a minimum of one year of experience explaining the cause and effect between laws, regulations, and policies as they apply to others.
5. Experience performing data input and retrieval on a computer. Typically gained through at least six months of work experience using automated system for data input and retrieval on a computer.

Specialty Qualifications:

1. Experience supervising, leading, or coordinating the work of others, including coaching employees, providing performance feedback, and addressing workplace issues.
2. Experience leading teams through change, addressing workplace conflict, and fostering a culture of accountability, professionalism, trust, and collaboration.
3. Experience interpreting and applying laws, regulations, policies, court orders, or other complex legal documents.
4. Experience resolving complex or sensitive issues that require sound judgment, critical thinking, and effective decision-making.
5. Experience communicating technical or complex information to diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing.
6. Experience analyzing information, identifying operational problems, developing solutions, and implementing improvements.
7. Experience building collaborative relationships and working effectively with multiple stakeholders to achieve organizational goals.

Desirable Qualifications:

1. Experience with sentence administration, sentence computation, or offender management processes.
2. Experience working within corrections, courts, probation, parole, prosecution, defense, or other criminal justice environments.
3. Experience supervising professional, technical, or administrative staff.
4. Experience managing organizational change and leading teams through transitions.
5. Experience conducting quality assurance reviews, audits, or compliance monitoring activities.
6. Experience reviewing judgments, commitments, warrants, court orders, or similar legal documents.
7. Experience supporting cross-functional teams, division-wide initiatives, or operational process improvements.
