Job Description
As our Bosun, you’ll be the hands-on steward of our fleet and docks—responsible for the daily maintenance, repairs, and readiness of every sailboat, powerboat, and piece of waterfront equipment. From seasonal launch and haul to routine rigging work, fiberglass fixes, hardware tweaks, and keeping all our Club boats spotless and reliable, you’ll be deeply involved in the mechanical side of our operation.
You’ll manage tools and parts, stay ahead of repairs, coordinate with staff, and step into waterfront operations when needed—from driving ribs to checking out Member rental boats. This role is ideal for someone who’s organized, mechanically confident, and proud to keep a fleet running safely and smoothly. If you love hands-on work, solving problems on the fly, and being a key player in a busy waterfront environment, we’d love to have you as part of the team. Competitive pay, up to 40 hours per week, weekend availability required.
Summary
The Bosun is responsible for the care, maintenance, and upkeep of ILYC’s fleet, equipment, and docks. This includes overseeing sailboats, powerboats, and waterfront facilities, ensuring they are safe, clean, and well-maintained throughout the season. While outside contractors handle major engine work, a basic understanding of outboard and diesel engines is preferred.
The Bosun will maintain inventories of parts and tools, and prepare equipment for daily use. During the season, this role also supports operations with sailboat use, lessons, and occasional launch driving. The ideal candidate is organized, handy, and experienced in boat maintenance, with strong sailing and maritime skills. Must be able to work weekends.
Core Responsibilities

- Conduct regular inspections of sailboats and powerboats.
- Perform routine maintenance (cleaning, rigging, minor fiberglass/gelcoat repair).
- Ensure boats are fueled, clean, and ready for use.
- Maintain organized inventory of parts, tools, and supplies.
- Coordinate with staff to identify and complete repairs.
- Assist with storm preparedness and emergency hauls.
- Support waterfront operations as needed.
- Deliver excellent customer service with a positive, proactive attitude.
- Maintain a well-groomed appearance in proper uniform and footwear.
Qualifications
- Strong knowledge of sailboat rigging and basic engine troubleshooting.
- Experience with fiberglass and gelcoat repairs.
- Ability to drive trailers.
