Role overview
The Director of Project Management leads the project management function overseeing multiple Project Managers who deliver custom fixture, furniture, and environment projects from initial client engagement through installation and post-install support. This role is accountable for portfolio results, including revenue, gross margin improvement, on-time delivery, quality, and client satisfaction across all active projects.
Team and leadership
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of Project Managers responsible for end-to-end delivery of custom fixture, POP, and exhibit programs, ensuring consistent execution of company standards.
- Set clear performance objectives, conduct regular reviews, and build succession and development plans for project management talent.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement between Project Management, Engineering, Production, Estimating, Purchasing, and Installation teams.
Portfolio, governance, and financials
- Own the project portfolio, prioritizing work, balancing capacity, and aligning projects with strategic and financial objectives set by the executive team.
- Establish and maintain standard project management methodologies, tools, templates, and stage-gate reviews used by all Project Managers.
- Monitor project and portfolio-level KPIs (revenue, gross margin, change-order performance, on-time delivery, cash flow milestones) and lead corrective action plans where needed.
- Lead Gross Margin Improvement initiatives across projects by driving cost savings, value engineering, and disciplined pricing and change-order management.
Client, vendor, and delivery oversight
- Provide executive oversight on key strategic accounts and complex programs, supporting Project Managers in client communication, escalation handling, and negotiation.
- Ensure consistent best practices for scoping, budgeting, vendor sourcing, quotations, contracts, change orders, and invoicing across all projects.
- Oversee standards for design approvals, shop drawings, prototyping, production tracking, logistics, installation, punch lists, and final handover to ensure quality and brand consistency.
- Support strategic vendor and installer relationships to ensure capacity, quality, and competitive cost structure for fixture fabrication and installation.
Process improvement and systems
- Identify cross-project issues and systemic bottlenecks, then lead process and tooling improvements that increase speed, quality, and predictability of project delivery.
- Champion adoption and effective use of project management, ERP, and reporting systems, ensuring accurate data for forecasting and decision-making.
- Standardize documentation, archiving, and lessons-learned practices so Project Managers consistently capture knowledge for future programs.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, operations, or related field; advanced degree a plus.
- 10 years of project or program management experience, including 5 years leading project management teams, ideally in store fixtures, POP, exhibits, architectural millwork, or related custom manufacturing environments.
- Demonstrated success overseeing a portfolio of client projects from scope through installation with responsibility for P&L, gross margin, and customer satisfaction.
- Strong understanding of fixture/furnishings manufacturing processes, drawings, value engineering, and installation workflows.
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with executives, clients, vendors, and internal teams.
- Professional certifications such as PMP, PgMP, or Six Sigma are preferred.
