Behavioral Health Counselor I

Provide comprehensive behavioral health services to individuals, families, and groups experiencing mental health concerns, substance use disorders, and co-occurring conditions. This role supports the center’s mission to promote mental health, emotional well-being, and recovery through evidence-based, culturally responsive, and person-centered care.

Responsibilities

Regulatory Compliance & Ethics

• Adhere to all applicable federal and state regulations, including HIPAA (45 CFR Parts 160 & 164) and 42 CFR Part 2
• Maintain client confidentiality and appropriate release of information procedures
• Comply with Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) behavioral health standards
• Participate in audits, quality assurance, and compliance reviews

Clinical Responsibilities

• Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial assessments and diagnostic evaluations
• Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on client needs
• Provide individual, group, and family counseling services
• Deliver crisis intervention and risk assessment
• Provide services for co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders
• Maintain timely, accurate, and clinically appropriate documentation (e.g., assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, discharge summaries) in accordance with agency, ethical, and regulatory standards
• Provide services via telehealth platforms in accordance with agency policy and state regulations

Care Coordination & Referrals

• Coordinate care with internal staff, medical providers, schools, courts, and community agencies
• Provide referrals to higher levels of care as needed
• Collaborate with drug court and other specialty programs when applicable
• Support continuity of care and discharge planning

Community Engagement & Prevention

• Participate in community outreach, psychoeducational workshops, and prevention initiatives
• Provide education on mental health, coping skills, and wellness strategies
• Support initiatives related to stigma reduction and behavioral health awareness

Program Development & Team Collaboration

• Contribute to the development of new services
• Participate in team meetings, case staffing, and interdisciplinary collaboration
• Assist in developing policies, procedures, and workflows for behavioral health services

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Master’s degree in counseling, clinical mental health counseling, or related field
• Active Louisiana license as a LPC, LCSW, LMFT, or provisionally licensed under supervision
• Experience working with diverse populations and co-occurring disorders

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with evidence-based practices (e.g., Motivational Interviewing, CBT)
• Experience in community-based behavioral health settings
• Experience with crisis response or high-risk populations
