JOB SUMMARY / OBJECTIVE:
The System Engineer 2 -EDS is responsible for developing and managing requirements, system design, and system testing for SureScan’s inline baggage screening products. This hands-on role applies electrical, mechanical, and software engineering skills to create system-level solutions, define interfaces, and optimize distributed processing architectures.
The System Engineer ensures performance and reliability across all critical functions, documents requirements and traceability using industry best practices, and defines verification and validation test procedures based on relevant use cases. This leadership-track position offers challenging technical responsibilities with potential for advancement to senior engineering management roles.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Analyze current system performance and customer requirements to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement
- Perform system design activities for new and upgraded system features and capabilities
- Collaborate with business development to align system capabilities with customer expectations
- Ensure all system design requirements are documented in functional specifications with use cases, UML diagrams, dataflows, and other relevant documentation
- Coordinate with Program Management and engineering departments to ensure successful completion of system engineering deliverables
- Monitor quality of engineering outputs and ensure project objectives are met
- Anticipate potential problems and resolve them directly or escalate as needed
- Estimate and track project effort to meet cost and schedule objectives
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong foundation in electrical and mechanical engineering design principles
- Knowledge of X-ray physics and related system considerations
- Software development experience in C , Python, or other languages
- Experience with Qt, Visual Studio, or similar development environments
- Ability to generate detailed system design documentation in test and graphic formats (Word, HTML, etc.)
- Strong organizational skills and self-directed discipline in records management
- Effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in science or engineering
- 5 years of experience performing system engineering functions for products with diverse technologies for aerospace, medical, or similar high‑technology industries
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with 2D and 3D image processing applications, including CT reconstruction
- Familiarity with networking and distributed computing architectures
- Database development and application experience
WORK AUTHORIZATION / SECURITY CLEARANCE:
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident
- Eligible for U.S. Security Clearance (Secret)
WORK SCHEDULE & LOCATION:
- On-site at SureScan facilities in Binghamton, NY
- Travel as required between SureScan locations (Binghamton, NY and Boxborough, MA) 3–5 times per year and to customer/test sites 2–3 times per year, typically for up to 14 days per trip
