About the Role
i2Systems is seeking an experienced Hardware / PCB Layout Engineer to design and deliver the electronics for our next-generation embedded control platform. This is a fast-paced, focused engagement where you'll adapt existing reference designs and execute PCB layout for a custom control board. You'll work closely with our embedded software contractor to ensure seamless hardware-firmware integration. This role requires a hands-on engineer who can move quickly with minimal supervision, interpret reference board designs, and deliver production-ready hardware on an accelerated timeline.
Responsibilities
Board Design & Layout
- Adapt reference board schematics for custom control board implementation
- Perform complete PCB layout for high-performance embedded control system
- Define board stack-up, power distribution, and signal routing strategy
- Apply impedance control, differential pair matching, and best practices for signal integrity
High-Speed & Mixed-Signal Design
- Route high-speed digital interfaces with proper signal integrity considerations
- Integrate wireless communication modules and RF circuitry
- Design multi-voltage power supply distribution
- Implement proper grounding and noise mitigation strategies
Hardware Validation & Integration
- Collaborate with embedded Linux contractor during board bring-up
- Support electrical validation and debugging during prototype testing
- Verify power sequencing, current draw, and interface functionality
- Available for on-site integration testing sessions as needed
Documentation & Manufacturing
- Generate complete design documentation: schematics, BOMs, Gerber files, assembly drawings
- Coordinate with external fabrication and assembly vendors
- Incorporate design revisions and prepare release documentation
Qualifications
Required
- 10 years of experience in PCB layout and design for embedded or industrial control electronics
- Proven ability to deliver complex board designs independently with minimal oversight
- Expert proficiency in Altium Designer or comparable PCB design suite
- Strong experience with:
- High-speed digital interface routing (USB, SDIO, etc.)
- RF module integration and layout best practices
- ARM-based embedded system designs
- Commercial System on Module (SOM) platforms
Multi-layer, mixed-signal board design
Experience working directly with firmware/software engineering teams
- Skilled with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and electrical test equipment
Preferred
- Prior experience with industrial control systems or IoT devices
- System on Module (SOM) integration and adaptation experience
- Understanding of automotive or industrial standards and EMI/EMC considerations
- Familiarity with thermal management and design-for-manufacturing principles
- Experience adapting vendor reference designs to custom applications
- Strong documentation discipline and revision control practices
Pay range and compensation package
Compensation: $90–$120/hr (DOE). This is a contract position with milestone-based deliverables. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
