American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter – Full-Time (Fort Stewart, GA)
Location: Fort Stewart, Georgia
Job Summary
We are seeking a qualified American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter to provide full-time interpretation services for students enrolled at Diamond Elementary School (DoDEA – Fort Stewart, GA). This position supports students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and/or Individualized Health Plans (IHPs) and plays a critical role in ensuring equal access to classroom instruction and school activities.
This is a school-year position, Monday through Friday. Hours are 08:00–15:30 when school is in session. Extended School Year (ESY) services may be required during summer (0800–1200 for 20 days).
Responsibilities
The ASL Interpreter shall:
- Provide interpretation services daily in alignment with IEP-mandated goals.
- Perform simultaneous and consecutive interpretation between English and ASL.
- Support the student by teaching new signs when needed.
- Accompany the student on the school bus to/from school if required by the IEP or IHP.
- Work onsite at Fort Stewart schools between 0800–1530 (school year) or 0800–1200 (ESY).
- Coordinate work schedule with the COR (Contracting Officer’s Representative).
- Ensure high-quality, accurate interpretation at all times.
- Maintain appropriate professional attire (business casual).
- Follow all confidentiality, conduct, and ethical standards—including the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.
- Meet with parents/sponsors when requested in writing by the COR.
- Complete all required trainings.
- Adhere to all policies outlined in the DoDEA PWS and Technical Exhibits.
Qualifications
Required:
- Certified in American Sign Language (ASL).
- Fluent in English and ASL, including signing, finger spelling, and body language.
- Minimum 1 year experience interpreting English ↔ ASL.
- Minimum 1 year experience interpreting for elementary-age children in a school setting.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to provide documentation of sign experience/knowledge when requested.
- Must provide all services onsite at Fort Stewart schools.
- Must have a clean criminal background check dated within the last year.
Schedule & Work Term
- Full-time, Monday–Friday
- 0800–1530 during the regular school year
- Extended School Year (summer) may require 0800–1200, 20 days
- Hours may increase/decrease based on student IEP needs or student mobility
