General Summary

Under the supervision of the Parks and Facilities Superintendent, the Maintenance Technician III performs advanced skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation, maintenance, repair, and improvement of District parks, athletic fields, irrigation systems, grounds, buildings, and facilities.

The primary focus of this role is athletic field maintenance, ensuring baseball and softball complexes meet District standards for safety, playability, and visual appeal. While ballfield maintenance is the core assignment, the individual is expected to work independently across all District properties, provide technical guidance or training to seasonal staff, and adapt to shifting seasonal priorities.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Athletic Field Maintenance: Prep, groom, repair, and line baseball and softball fields; maintain pitching mounds, home plate areas, and infield skin surfaces; manage specialized sports turf and athletic equipment.
  2. Irrigation Operations: Troubleshoot, repair, and program commercial irrigation systems and central controls; monitor water-use efficiency, manage water loss, and ensure compliance with backflow and municipal water regulations.
  3. Grounds & Turf Care: Perform advanced turf management, including mowing, fertilization, aeration, weeding, and landscape installations.
  4. Facility & Building Maintenance: Execute skilled structural repairs involving basic carpentry, painting, plumbing, and minor electrical or HVAC maintenance across restrooms, shelters, and pavilions.
  5. Equipment Operations: Safely operate and service heavy machinery, including  skidsteer, loaders, specialized field groomers, commercial mowers, and utility vehicles.
  6. Project Coordination & Administration: Plan, prioritize, and track maintenance projects; utilize the digital work-order management system daily to log hours, materials, and safety inspections.
  7. Leadership & Safety: Provide hands-on training and technical guidance to lower-level and seasonal staff; maintain a clean, organized, and compliant work environment.

Qualifications & Experience

  1. Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  2. Experience: Minimum of 3–5 years of progressive experience in sports turf management, park maintenance, commercial landscaping, or equivalent technical certifications.
  3. Certifications: Valid Colorado Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record. Specialized certifications (e.g., Certified Sports Field Manager, pesticide applicator license, or backflow tester certification) preferred.
  4. Skills: Advanced knowledge of commercial irrigation systems, ballfield skin maintenance, heavy equipment operation, and general facility trades.

Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  1. Environment: Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind).
  2. Heavy Physical Exertion: To include lifting up to 50 lbs routinely to move field materials, equipment or machinery and bending, kneeling, and walking on uneven or rough terrain for extended periods to navigate outfields, parks and job sites safely.
  3. Schedule: Full-time. Requires a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, and rotating weekends to support tournament schedules, rentals, or inclement weather/snow removal.
