The Animal Technician is responsible for providing care for various poultry in a research environment as well as packaging of final products. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, thorough cleaning of animal enclosures and work areas; distributing animal diets and water; assisting scientists in vaccinating poultry; maintaining documentation; maintaining equipment and facilities; operation of heavy machinery; and ongoing monitoring of the health of poultry in our care.
Qualifications
- High school graduate or current college student
- Experience in animal handling
- A valid CA driver’s license
- Experience working with poultry desired
- Experience working with research animals desired
Responsibilities
- Perform routine, daily animal husbandry (diet prep, feeding, water, cleaning) for poultry (primarily chickens and turkeys)
- Ensure that the general upkeep of all animal work spaces are maintained, including but not limited to, cleaning animal cages, cleaning food and water containers, laundry, sweeping and mopping work space floors.
- Observe and document animal health concerns and report to appropriate staff
- Follow all safety requirements while performing assigned tasks, notifying supervisor of any safety concerns
- Assist scientists with vaccinations, taking blood samples, bird weights, necropsy, and collecting other data to support projects
- Letting the supervisor know when supplies are low or equipment needs maintenance.
- Upkeep of documentation regarding poultry health, population, and test status.
- Assists in regular maintenance of facility and equipment.
- Assists with vacuum checking, crimping, labeling, and boxing final product vials.
- Assists with other laboratory duties as needed.
Working Conditions
- Work is performed in an indoor animal facility with exposure to seasonal outdoor conditions
- Must have reliable transportation
- Must be comfortable working with animals – specifically poultry
- Hours are 25 per week and flexible.
- Weekend work required to maintain animal health; must be available to work at least one weekend morning and holidays as needed
- Animal waste contact, smells and visual exposure are prevalent
- Occasional lifting up to 75 lbs. with reasonable accommodation
- Frequent walking, bending and stooping in animal areas
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
