Position Summary

The Equipment Assembler / Service Technician Trainee is responsible for assembling, testing, repairing, and refurbishing mechanical equipment while developing the technical knowledge and hands-on experience required to transition into a Field Service Technician role within 1–2 years. This position is ideal for mechanically inclined individuals who are eager to learn industrial equipment, electrical systems, troubleshooting, and customer service.
The successful candidate will participate in a structured cross-training program that prepares them to perform equipment installation, startup, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair at customer sites. Candidates must be willing and able to travel as training progresses and after transitioning into the Field Service Technician role.

Responsibilities

Assembly & Manufacturing

  • Assemble machinery, mechanical systems, and subcomponents according to engineering drawings, work instructions, and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Disassemble, clean, inspect, refurbish, and reassemble equipment to OEM specifications.
  • Perform mechanical fitting, alignment, adjustment, and final assembly of equipment.
  • Remove rough spots and discoloration from welded areas using hand tools and passivation equipment.
  • Safely operate hand tools, power tools, precision measuring instruments, and shop equipment.
  • Assist with equipment testing, inspections, and quality verification prior to shipment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Cross-Training & Technical Development

  • Participate in a structured training program to develop the skills required for a Field Service Technician position within 1–2 years.
  • Learn electrical fundamentals, including basic AC/DC and single- and three-phase electrical systems.
  • Develop troubleshooting skills involving mechanical, pneumatic, and electrical equipment.
  • Learn to read and interpret assembly drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and BOMs.
  • Assist experienced Service Technicians with equipment startup, maintenance, repairs, and customer support as opportunities arise.
  • Build knowledge of PLCs, VFDs, HMIs, motor controls, and industrial automation systems.

Field Service Preparation

  • As technical skills develop, responsibilities will expand to include:
  • Equipment installation and startup assistance.
  • Preventive maintenance and equipment inspections.
  • Troubleshooting and repair of mechanical and electro-mechanical systems.
  • Customer training and technical support.
  • Documentation of service work using company software and reporting systems.
  • Travel to customer locations for training and service assignments.

Safety & Teamwork

  • Follow all company safety policies and wear required PPE at all times.
  • Safely operate or learn to operate forklifts, pallet jacks, overhead cranes, scissor lifts, boom lifts, and rigging equipment.
  • Work collaboratively with engineering, manufacturing, and service teams.
  • Maintain company equipment and workspaces with professionalism and care.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by management.

Competencies & Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn new technical skills.
  • Experience using hand tools, power tools, grinders, and precision measuring tools.
  • Ability to read or learn to read assembly drawings, BOMs, and technical documentation.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willingness to travel as required for training and future field service assignments.
  • Valid driver's license with the ability to obtain and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds repeatedly and stand for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment that is not temperature controlled.

Preferred

  • Manufacturing or industrial assembly experience.
  • Experience with electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical systems, pneumatics, or industrial controls.
  • Experience operating forklifts, overhead cranes, or other material handling equipment.
  • Familiarity with PLCs, VFDs, HMIs, or industrial automation systems.
  • Associate degree or technical certification in a mechanical, electrical, industrial maintenance, or related field.

Career Development
This position is designed as the primary development path into a Field Service Technician role. Employees who demonstrate strong mechanical ability, technical aptitude, safety awareness, customer service skills, and a willingness to travel will be eligible to transition into a Field Service Technician position, typically within 12–24 months.
Upon successful completion of the training program, responsibilities will expand to include:

  • Equipment installation and commissioning.
  • Customer startup assistance and operator training.
  • Preventive maintenance and field repairs.
  • Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Domestic and occasional international travel.
  • Independent customer service and technical support.

Physical Requirements

  • Lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently.
  • Stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in various positions throughout the workday.
  • Safely operate material handling equipment after training.
  • Work in both manufacturing and customer site environments.
  • Wear required PPE while in production areas and customer facilities.

Travel Requirements

  • Limited travel during the initial training period.
  • Travel requirements will increase as cross-training progresses.
  • After transition into the Field Service Technician role, travel may reach approximately 50–80%, including overnight domestic travel and occasional international travel.
