High School Counselor

POSITION OVERVIEW

Hyde School seeks a skilled, compassionate, and mission-aligned School Counselor to lead student mental health and wellness support, working in close relationship with the Health Office. This senior clinical role is responsible for individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, care coordination with outside providers, and active partnership with faculty, dorm staff, and families across our residential community. The successful candidate will bring strong clinical grounding alongside a genuine belief in Hyde's character education philosophy - understanding that in a boarding school setting, wellness and character development are inseparable.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Clinical Counseling & Crisis Support

• Provide individual short-term counseling for anxiety, depression, adjustment, identity, grief, and other adolescent concerns
• Facilitate psychoeducational and support groups on stress management, coping skills, and social-emotional learning
• Conduct risk assessments and manage crises involving self-harm, suicidality, eating disorders, and acute mental health episodes; coordinate appropriate levels of care
• Maintain accurate, confidential clinical records in compliance with HIPAA, FERPA, and Maine state law

Residential Community & Family Engagement

• Serve as a visible, accessible wellness presence — attending school events, meals, and activities to build trust and reduce stigma
• Consult regularly with dorm faculty, advisors, coaches, and the Dean of Students on student well-being
• Communicate with parents and families with appropriate attention to confidentiality, supporting Hyde's distinctive family engagement model
• Participate in duty rotation and respond to after-hours wellness emergencies as needed

Prevention, Education & Care Coordination

• Design and lead wellness programming on mental health literacy, healthy relationships, substance use prevention, and stress resilience
• Maintain a referral network of therapists, psychiatrists, and clinical programs in the Bath/Brunswick/Portland region
• Coordinate higher-level care transitions (inpatient, PHP, IOP) and support re-entry planning for students returning from leave

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Master's degree in counseling, clinical mental health counseling, social work, or a related field from an accredited institution
• Active Maine licensure as an LCPC, LPC, LCSW, or LMSW - or documented eligibility for Maine licensure with a clear plan to obtain full licensure within the first year of employment (see Maine Licensure section below)
• Clinical experience working with adolescents in a school, community mental health, or residential setting
• Competency in crisis assessment and suicide risk intervention
• Knowledge of HIPAA, FERPA, and Maine mandatory reporting obligations
• Genuine enthusiasm for residential school life and Hyde's character education mission

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• 3 years as a school counselor or adolescent clinician in an independent, boarding, or residential school setting
• Familiarity with evidence-based modalities for adolescents: CBT, DBT skills, motivational interviewing, trauma-informed approaches
• Experience with eating disorder support, substance use counseling, or co-occurring presentations
• Background in wellness programming and psychoeducational group facilitation
• Enthusiasm for the outdoor, experiential, and arts-centered dimensions of boarding school life in mid-coast Maine

MAINE LICENSURE

Maine licensure is governed by the Board of Counseling Professionals Licensure (BCPL). Hyde School requires that the successful candidate hold or be actively pursuing a Maine clinical license. Primary pathways:

• LCPC (Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor) - Preferred: Requires a 60-credit CACREP-accredited master's degree, passing scores on both the NCE and NCMHCE, and 3,000 hours of supervised post-degree clinical experience. Authorizes independent clinical practice, including diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders.
• LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor): Non-clinical license; requires a 48-credit CACREP-accredited master's degree, NCE, and 2,000 supervised hours.
• LCSW / LMSW: Accepted for candidates with an MSW from an accredited program and equivalent clinical experience, licensed through the Maine Board of Social Worker Licensure.

Out-of-state licensees may apply through Maine's endorsement pathway. Maine has also joined the Interstate Counseling Compact, which may offer an expedited route for eligible licensees from compact member states. Visit maine.gov/pfr for details.
