The Work

No two projects look alike here. In the past year our team has:

• Restored a 1934 historic estate in Pinehurst — new roof, siding, exterior trim, Pella windows, whole-house electrical, and interior plaster and paint
• Built a custom home from the ground up in Cedar Grove, from foundation and framing through finish
• Added a two-story addition and full kitchen to a family home in Cary
• Built a glass greenhouse with stone walls and a custom heating system
• Renovated a commercial office space top to bottom — metal stud framing, ceilings, flooring, signage, and paint

We run our jobs on JobTread, plan carefully, and communicate directly with clients. You'll work alongside the owners and superintendent, not through five layers of management.

The Role

We're hiring a Craftsman — a well-rounded carpenter who can move between framing, exterior work, and finish carpentry, and who takes ownership of the details that make a project feel finished. Your week might include hanging doors and running trim on a new build, repairing siding on a historic home, completing a punch list with the superintendent, or heading back to a finished project to take care of a client's warranty request.

What You'll Do

• Carpentry — rough and finish: framing, sheathing, decks, exterior trim and siding, interior trim, doors, windows, hardware, built-ins
• Punch-list completion — walk nearly finished projects with the superintendent, build the list, and close it out: trim and caulk, drywall repair, paint touch-up, minor tile, fixtures and accessories
• Warranty service — respond to client requests on completed projects, diagnose the issue, and fix it or coordinate the right trade; represent HBC in clients' homes
• Small projects — run smaller remodel and repair jobs start to finish
• Jobsite care — prep and protect the site, keep it clean, leave occupied homes cleaner than you found them
• Documentation — daily logs, photos, and materials in JobTread so the office and client know where things stand
• Process — follow HBC checklists, safety practices, and communication standards

What We're Looking For

• 3 years in residential construction or remodeling with strong carpentry fundamentals; custom or high-end experience preferred
• Broad hands-on ability across framing, exterior, and finish work, plus enough drywall, paint, and trim-out plumbing/electrical to handle punch and warranty items — and the judgment to know when to call a licensed trade
• An eye for detail and pride in clean, plumb, square, finished work
• Self-directed; able to work from a list and a schedule without supervision
• Comfortable and courteous in occupied homes; clear communicator with clients, subs, and the office
• Problem-solver who fixes causes, not just symptoms
• Comfortable using a phone app for logs and photos
• High school diploma or GED
• Valid driver's license and clean driving record; your own hand and power tools

Tools You'll Need

Circular saw, reciprocating saw, oscillating multi-tool, cordless drill/driver, jigsaw, miter saw, table saw (or access), compressor with framing, 16-, 18-, and 23-gauge nailers, levels, and standard hand tools. HBC provides specialty tools and consumables.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs, work from ladders and scaffolding, and stand, kneel, climb, and bend for extended periods in indoor and outdoor conditions.

A Day in the Life at Hutton Building Company

Each week, you’ll receive a set of tasks at various job sites—ranging from high-end kitchen remodels to new construction builds. Your day-to-day will look like this:

Plan Ahead – Organize your tools and coordinate materials with the project manager.
Execute Work Efficiently – Work solo or with 1-2 assistants to complete tasks on time.
Collaborate & Communicate – Check in daily with the project manager and consult specialists as needed.
Keep It Clean & Organized – Maintain a spotless job site and properly store all tools.
Document Progress – Use our project management software to send updates, photos, and descriptions.
Stay One Step Ahead – Think through the next day’s tasks and ensure you have everything needed to keep things moving forward.
