CLASSIFICATION: non-exempt
GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Performs a variety of functions and tasks associated with Public Services under the professional guidance and supervision of the Public Services Supervisor.
EXAMPLES OF WORK:
- Registers library cards, checking in, checking out, checking patron accounts
- Processes interlibrary loan requests and items received
- Helps patrons with logins and questions for computer area
- Helps patrons with print station, photocopier, fax machine, and other equipment
- Helps patrons with searching Polaris and finding materials
- Helps patrons with auto repair manuals
- Helps patrons with using Wi-Fi and e-resources
- Answers basic informational and directional questions
- Assists with creating and promoting library’s events and services
- Shelves and shelf-reads various library collections
- Deliver outreach materials
- May assist with selecting items for outreach patrons
- May assist with readers’ advisory and collection development
- May assist with other ILL processes
- May assist with the Library Makerspace when needed
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent customer service skills, with practical experience preferred
- Ability to take initiative and manage time wisely
- Self-motivation
- Pleasant and effective professional communication
- Good judgment, orderliness, accuracy, tact, and adaptability
- Knowledge of alphabetical and numerical organization
- Proficiency with keyboarding, word processing, online communication, and web and database searching
- Attendance and punctuality is essential
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma required. Some training past high school preferred
- Proficiency with computers required
- Some subject knowledge developed through work experience
- Evening and weekend work required
- Kansas driver’s license
- Good health
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF POSITION:
Lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs.
Pushing up to 60 lbs. of books on carts
Sitting, standing, walking, climbing, stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching
Talking and hearing
Handling, processing, picking up, and shelving of books and materials
EQUIPMENT USED:
Desktop computer, laptop computer, telephone, fax machine, photocopier, audio/video devices, scanner, color printer, self-check in machine, self-checkout machine, smart pickup lockers.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This position operates mainly indoors in an office setting and in direct customer service situations. There will be some travel required and some work outdoors at programs and events. This is a fully on-site position.
