JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Summary:
Responsible for the collection of blood and other specimens from patients for the purpose of testing and analysis. Performs basic laboratory functions that support the laboratory mission with an emphasis on customer service. Lab Assistant II is cross trained to perform duties including: laboratory reception, specimen collection, processing of specimens and waived testing. Additionally, Lab Assistant II may work in the Lab Coordinator role, assist with workflow development, training of new staff/students, specimen processing in the hospital setting and perform limited non-waived testing according to policy and procedures.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Promotes an engaged and positive environment among the laboratory team.
Specimen collection (blood, urine, throat, and nasopharyngeal).
Verifies patient identity using two patient identifiers.
Maintains a clean and injury free environment for patients, self, and employees by observing and adhering to all established safety and blood borne pathogen protocol.
Accurately interprets written/verbal physician orders.
Follows all established procedures and protocols with proper documentation.
Adheres to the AIDET practices for excellent customer service.
Performs waived and non-waived testing according to policy and procedures.
Provide guidance for new employees/students according to the training checklists.
Displays leadership ability and strong work ethic in a team base environment.
Act as a resource for questions and concerns brought by new employees, students, and other department employees.
Follow all regulatory guidelines including Joint Commission, OSHA, CLIA, and HIPAA.
Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Reports any health/medical errors.
Observes all Environment of Care policies and reports safety risks or hazards immediately.
Education, Training or Degree Required:
Must be able to read, write, make simple calculations and follow oral and written directions accurately.
High school graduate or equivalent is required. Experience in a medical related field or an applied science degree is desirable. Certification in phlebotomy required. Certified Medical Assistant is preferred.
License/Registration/Certification Required: (will be primary source verified by HR)
Phlebotomy certification (required).
Certified Medical Assistant (Preferred). CMA certification will suffice for phlebotomy certification.
Experience and Skills: (indicate preferred or required)
Must be accurate and precise (required).
Manual dexterity (required)
Able to work independently (required)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills (required)
Competent computer skills to navigate within a laboratory information system. (required)
Demonstrate strong competence in the Lab Assistant I role for a minimum of 6 months.
Possess a high degree of discretion and confidentiality.
Phlebotomy experience (required).
Laboratory experience or internship (preferred).
