The Journeyman Chassis Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing the chassis (the wheeled frames used to transport shipping containers) at a port or terminal.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Inspect chassis regularly for safety and DOT compliance
- Repair and replace components, including:
- Brakes (air brake systems)
- Tires and wheels
- Lights and electrical wiring
- Suspension systems
- Twist locks (that secure containers)
- Perform preventive maintenance to keep equipment operational
- Diagnose mechanical issues (air leaks, brake failure, structural damage, etc.)
- Weld and fabricate parts when needed (common in port environments)
Additional Responsibilities include the following.
- Comply with Corporate Safety and IAM Collective Bargaining Agreement

Minimum Requirements (Education. Experience, Certifications, Credentials):
- Two years of related schooling or seven years of applicable experience.
- Experience maintaining Magnum and Busby bombcart chassis
- WABO Welder Certified preferred
- Selected candidate will be required to be a member of the IAM Union and will be governed by the applicable bargaining unit agreement.
- Must have current EPA cards and field related tools
- Obtain and Maintain TWIC (Transportation Workers Identification Card) issued by the Department of Homeland Security
- Valid US Driver’s License
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Be able to communicate, both verbal and written
- Work as directed by General Foreman
- Maintain positive attitude amongst colleagues and terminal personnel
- Stay focused under high-pressure situations, including reefer load repairs
- Troubleshooting and repairing all types of power equipment, terminal and stevedore, while maintaining a safe work area
- Be able to read, interpret, and follow electrical and hydraulic schematics
Physical Working Conditions
- Requires the full use of the person's hands, arms, and legs
- Must be physically able to work from gangways, stools, ladders, scissor lifts, and reach all without being afraid of heights
- Upper body strength to be able to lift heavier parts such as compressors and evaporator coils up to 50 lbs
- Ability to stand, sits, squatting when necessary
- Ability to see and hear fast moving equipment
- Able to work all hours 7 days a week

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to hot and cold climates based on weather conditions, wet/humid environment, non-weather conditions, work near moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor conditions, risk of electrical shock, and vibration). The noise level in the work environment is loud.
