JOB TITLE: Bus Driver**Requires a CDL Class A or B driver with a Passenger & School Bus endorsement.
DEPARTMENT: Transportation
REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation PAY GRADE: AUX 03
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Bus Driver, under the direct supervision of the Operations Manager, is responsible for the safe and orderly transportation of students on assigned routes of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District. Operates a school bus that transports students and other authorized personnel to and from schools or designated locations.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
- Valid Texas Commercial Driver’s License - Class A or B, including P and S endorsements - insurable by the School District’s insurance carrier
- State Bus Driver’s certification course
- DOT Physical Medical Examiner’s Certificate
- Must have driving record in good standing as deemed appropriate by the Texas DPS
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- One year of experience in related field preferred
- Ability to follow instructions (written and verbal)
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to carry heavy loads quickly and safely
- Basic technology skills, including the required use of Smart Tag tablets as implemented by the district
Minimum Experience:
- One year of experience in related field preferred
- Alternatives to the above, as the District finds appropriate
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Safely and efficiently delivers students to and from schools by following assigned bus routes, adhering to established schedules and obeying all traffic laws.
- Maintains safety precautions when students are boarding and departing buses by using hand operated door mechanisms.
- Maintains discipline and reports student discipline problems to the appropriate Administrator.
- Maintains current record of assigned routes and stops, including required seating charts for elementary and junior high students.
- Performs prompt, quick bus evacuations of students in emergency situations.
- Keeps the interior of the bus clean, and maintains appropriate level of fuel in the bus at all times.
- Inspects bus for students after each route and prior to returning to the Transportation facility.
- Ability to operate cell phone equipment and communicate with the Transportation Office.
- Checks the bus for mechanical defects before and after each operation and reports any abnormality or malfunction immediately.
- Reports involvement in any accident, vehicle damage, and student injuries immediately; completes required reports.
- Administers basic first aid when necessary.
- Completes specialized training opportunities made available through the Transportation Department: i.e. CPR, first-aid, behind-the-wheel training, discipline management procedures, etc.
- Maintains positive rapport with students, administrators, teachers, staff, and parents.
- Understands and observes state laws pertinent to vehicle safety.
- Attends required staff development and monthly safety meetings as required by the Administration and/or Director.
- Assumes responsibility for personal daily timecards.
- Demonstrates behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.
- Follows all rules, regulations, and policies of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District.
- Performs other functions that may be assigned by the Administration and/or Director.
- Utilize a systems approach to Continuous Improvement.
EQUIPMENT USED:
Operates a school bus and all district-issued equipment, including specialized equipment for students with special needs. This includes full utilization of the Smart Tag tablet and system, as well as a two-way radio, in accordance with district guidelines and implementation standards.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
- Requires performing tasks sitting, twisting and bending
- Work positions include kneeling and climbing, with extended reaching above head
- Lifting and carrying up to 40 lbs., team lift up to 150 lbs.
- Loads and unloads vehicle, making frequent stop, lifting and pulling up to 20 pounds on hand device to open and close bus door
- Ability to safely exit rear of bus from 4’ elevation
- Operates vehicles (up to 60,000 pounds) up to 100 miles per day in rural and city traffic
- Climb steps in and out of bus up to 16 times per route from an 20” elevation (3 routes daily)
- Ability to walk 35 yards within 25 seconds
- Drives in reverse 2% of time, which requires twisting the upper body and neck while driving
- Exposures to inclement weather, including heat, cold, rain, and snow
