JOB TITLE: Bus Monitor **6 Hours Daily

WAGE/HOUR STATUS: Non-exempt

REPORTS TO: Operations Manager

PAY GRADE: AUX 02

DEPARTMENT: Transportation

DAYS: 179

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Bus Monitor, under direct supervision of the Operations Manager, rides the special education buses of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District and assists the drivers in providing safe and orderly transportation of students with special needs.

  • Operations Manager
  • Director of Transportation

QUALIFICATIONS:

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Ability to follow instructions (written and verbal)
  • Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
  • Ability to work well with students with special needs
  • Ability to carry heavy loads quickly and safely

Minimum Experience:

  • One year of experience in related field preferred
  • Alternatives to the above, as the District finds appropriate

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Assists in the carrying, loading, securing and unloading of students according to their individual needs.
  • Assists promptly and quickly with student evacuations in emergency situations.
  • Maintains student discipline; documents and reports student discipline problems to the appropriate Administrator.
  • Assists bus driver in daily bus inspections.
  • Assists the bus driver in keeping the interior of the bus clean.
  • Assists substitute driver with route directions and student management.
  • Inspects bus for students after each route and prior to returning to the Transportation facility.
  • Conducts equipment inspections and is responsible for making basic adjustments during breakdowns.
  • Completes specialized training opportunities made available through the Transportation Department: i.e. CPR, first aid, discipline management procedures, etc.
  • Assumes responsibility for personal daily timecard.
  • Attends required staff development and monthly safety meetings as assigned by the Administration and/or Director.
  • Demonstrates behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.
  • Follows all rules, regulations, and policies of the Hurst-Euless-Bedford Independent School District.
  • Performs other functions that may be assigned by the Administration and/or Supervisor.
  • Utilize a systems approach to continuous improvement.

EQUIPMENT USED:

Variety of equipment to accommodate special needs students to include (but not limited to) a seat belt, wheel chair, mobility devices, special harness and wheel chair lift

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Mental Demands:

  • Effective communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Maintains effective control over groups of students
  • Responds appropriately in emergency situations
  • Maintains emotional control under stressful conditions

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

  • Requires performing tasks standing, sitting, twisting and bending on a stationary or moving bus
  • Ability to walk 35 yards within 25 seconds
  • Working positions include kneeling and climbing, with extended reaching in front of and above body
  • Lifting and carrying up to 40 lbs., team lift up to 150 lbs.
  • Climb steps in and out of bus up to 16 times per route from 20” elevation (3 routes daily)
  • Ability to safely exit rear of bus from 4’ elevation
