Water II $43,399.20 - $65,208 depending on experience and certifications.

Position Summary

Incumbents in this position perform a variety of entry level skilled duties related to the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of city water and pressurized irrigation systems. Requires working extended or irregular hours such as weekends, nights and holidays.

Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the Water Supervisor.

Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. The list of tasks is illustrative only and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.)

  • Operates various types of equipment such as, rollers, compactors and trenching equipment; performs installation or repair of water service connections, water lines and meters.
  • Flushes, repairs or replaces fire hydrants and plugged water meters; repairs water mains; cleans and maintains storage tanks; cleans reservoirs.
  • Connects and disconnects services.
  • Searches out shut off valves; water line leaks; assists in placement of pipe and water regulators; removes, disassembles, cleans or replaces defective parts of regulators, adjusts pilot valves as needed to assure efficient water line service.
  • Installs new water lines using pipe threaded, tapping machine, welder, pipe cutting saw, pipe and cable locator.
  • Tears out and repairs curb, gutter and street in locating and uncovering broken lines; builds meter boxes; builds extensions to raise or lower existing boxes as needed.
  • Operates a variety of hand tools and small power equipment such as jack hammers, roller, compressors, packing machine, gopher, tamper, tapping machine; cleans tools and equipment to assure proper working order.
  • Performs repairs and maintenance on pump stations, pumps, valves, wells; monitors city water well storage levels; ensures proper maintenance of electrical, pumping, chlorinating and storage equipment; maintains records of water lines, pumps and valves, storage levels, etc.
  • Conducts water sampling and delivers to State-certified laboratory for analysis; monitors chlorine levels; tests water using DPD tester to assure proper chlorine residual levels; reads water flow meter, chlorine pound per day gauge; calculates chlorine dosage and makes proper adjustments.
  • Installs water meters for new services; performs field and shop repairs on water meters, removes meter, disassemble, cleans and/or replaces defective parts, reassembles and tests to assure proper working order; sets blue stake markers.
  • Participates in work zone safety procedures; flags on coming vehicles to protect the public and workers; sets up warning signs and signalization equipment.
  • Performs general maintenance in the upkeep of facilities and equipment; paints water tanks, well buildings, floors, etc.; assures clean and functional work areas; operates high pressure steam cleaning equipment as needed.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Qualifications, Education and Experience
a. High school diploma or equivalent; AND
b. One (1) year experience related to duties listed for this position preferred; OR
c. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
d. Possess and maintain a valid Utah Driver's License throughout employment.
e. Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening required.

2. Special Qualifications
a. Possess a valid Utah Driver's License throughout employment and meet requirements of Hurricane City's Operation of Vehicle Policy; Utah Commercial Driver License is desirable.
b. Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Water Operator II certification within nine (9) months of employment.
c. All accredited certifications must be kept current. Failure to do so may result in loss of position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Some knowledge of operating basic manual and power tools; the standard practices, methods, materials and tools necessary for pipe line construction and repair activities; pipe fitting procedures, pipe classifications and type.
  • The occupational hazards and safety precautions of trench work construction and pipeline maintenance work; hazards common to heavy equipment operation; drain system construction methods etc.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment of various kinds under varying conditions; make minor repairs on assigned vehicles, perform heavy physical labor.
  • Tolerate weather extremes in the work environment.
  • Perform basic mathematical computations in reading and using various meters, gauges and related devices.
  • Interpersonal communication skills. Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. Perform basic mathematical computations in reading and using various meters, gauges and related devices.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, elected officials, local agencies and the general public.
  • Develop effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates and the public.

Typical Physical/Mental Demands/Working Conditions

Position requires incumbent to perform moderate physical activity. Required to push, pull or lift medium to heavy weights. May have uncomfortable working positions such as stooping, crouching and bending. Moderate exposure to elements such as heat, cold dampness, fumes, noise, dust or grease. May have disagreeable elements such as appearance of work place, poor ventilation or uneven temperatures. Occupational safety and health hazards may be encountered under controlled conditions. Some exposure to hazardous materials such as fumes, pesticides, cleaning agents, etc. and high levels of noise. Function within construction areas, trenches and confined spaces. Exposure to stress as a result of human behavior.
Frequent local travel required in normal course of job performance.

Condition of Employment
This position has mandatory on-call shift rotations. Employee may be required to work extended or irregular hours such as nights, weekends and holidays. Hurricane City employment can require employees to occasionally work outside of their normal job duties to assist with city sponsored events and/or projects. The employee is expected to forgo normal work duties to assist with the completion of these events and/or projects. In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the deliver and restoration of vital services.
