Assists in the administration, supervision, and coordination of patient care services to provide a seamless system of care. Administers and supervises nursing and non-nursing personnel to ensure operational effectiveness on evenings, nights, weekends, and holiday shifts as required. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to the Medical Center's Courtesy Performance Standards. Works under the general supervision of the Administrator who reviews work for effectiveness through conferences, reports, and periodical personal surveys. Exercises direct supervision over clinic service personnel and ancillary personnel in issues relating to operational effectiveness, efficiency, and safety.


  • Directs, coordinates, and participates in patient care activities in nursing services in conformance to hospital standards, nursing standards, physician orders, and Medical Center philosophy and objectives to ensure seamless patient flow. Interfaces with other departments/units including Emergency Services, Surgical Services, and intensive care units and disciplines to facilitate patient care.
  • Consistently makes rounds on all assigned units evaluating patient and staffing needs, quality of patient care, and nursing productivity.
  • Collaborates with departmental/unit leaders and administrators to achieve required staffing standards. Communicates with appropriate supervisory/managerial staff regarding problems requiring intervention.
  • Provides information to administrator and/or house director as appropriate to ensure nursing and medical center administration are aware of significant events and overall status of departments assigned.
  • Communicates orally and in writing with administrator relative to patient care and employee performance.
  • Evaluates, prioritizes, and deploys appropriate resources under urgent/emergent situations.
  • Investigates complaints of patients, relatives, physicians, personnel, and visitors. Takes necessary steps toward resolution of complaints.
  • Assists in identifying, coordinating, and conducting education, training, and in-servicing programs for patients, staff, and physicians. Demonstrates participation of educational programs that enhance clinical knowledge and supervisory skills related to assigned cases.
  • Schedules, assigns work to, evaluates, disciplines, and, when necessary, recommends discharge of departmental personnel. Completes performance reviews in timely manner. Answers grievances. Improves employee performance through on-going counseling, coaching, delegation and feedback. Orients new staff members.
  • Approves leaves, vacations, personal days, and overtime. Accurately computes and signs time cards or uses automated systems.
  • Assists administrator in developing and meeting departmental goals and objectives, operating and capital budgets, and business plans.
  • Compiles, maintains, and schedules necessary departmental and operation reports.

  • Conducts individual and group conferences with staff to clarify responsibilities and expectations.
  • Attends meetings internal and external to the Medical Center as needed.
  • Provides nursing care in emergency situations to patients per medical center standards.
  • Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, react competently, and treat (if appropriate) unique needs of patient age groups served.
  • Performs other duties as required. Utilizes new improvements and/or technologies that relate to job assignment.
  • Assists administrator with onsite and offsite clinics. Including new developments and expansions of services.

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Three (3) years of professional nursing experience preferred including at least one (1) year in the clinical subclass required.
  • Thorough knowledge of principles of supervision.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the specialized field of nursing in area of responsibility.
  • Mental and physical health to meet demands of the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem-solve.
  • Ability to supervise in routine and complex patient care situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, subordinates, other Medical Center employees, physicians, patients, and the general public.
