This position is Full time FTE: 1.0 (80 hrs/per pay) 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m

Three (3) years of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse is required (please show this on your application).

Assesses, educates, and manages the blood glucose levels and diabetes medications of patients referred to the Diabetes during Pregnancy Program. Follows the standards set forth by the Michigan Department of Community Health and the American Diabetes Association. Participates in quality assessment and continuous quality improvement activities. Complies with all appropriate safety and infection control standards. Performs all job duties and responsibilities in a courteous and customer-focused manner according to Hurley's Patient and Family Centered Care philosophy. Receives clinical direction from the Program Director for Maternal/Fetal Medicine and the Medical Director of the Hurley Diabetes Center. Nursing supervision received from the Director for Women's Health Services. Serves as a resource to nursing personnel, resident staff, and other health professionals throughout the Medical Center and surrounding communities.


  • Performs diabetes blood glucose management and insulin adjustments in the outpatient clinics. Assists residents and attending physicians with this management on the inpatient units. Assesses patient educational needs. Coordinates with and advises medical staff to assure that patient education and care is incorporated into the patient's plan of care. The clinician will clinically manage blood glucose levels from preconception through 6 weeks postpartum.
  • Implements patient education, documents instruction given, and evaluates learner outcomes while incorporating patient's self-management skills.
  • Counsels patients and their families regarding diabetes regime. Promotes understanding, acceptance and compliance with procedures and activities necessary to meet diabetes management goals.
  • Provides post-partum follow-up education for patients with diabetes. Coordinates discharge planning with other medical staff.
  • Uses evidence-based medicine and best practices to provide quality diabetes education and management.
  • Acts as a resource for private physicians; providing guidance and direction in managing their diabetes patients.
  • Assists in data collection for research in diabetes during pregnancy.
  • Practices in an advanced nursing role as a consultant to Hurley physicians and physicians in the surrounding region in the medical management of pregnant women diabetes that have a high level of medical acuity. Utilizes advanced technologies such as insulin pumps and glucose sensors in the medical management of these women.
  • Assists with annual curriculum review and formal diabetes program evaluation.
  • Demonstrates effective judgment and ability to understand, and adjust teaching methods to the unique cultural and educational level of each patient that is served.

  • Baccalaureate degree in health related field and graduation from an accredited School of Nursing.
  • Three (3) years progressive experience as a registered nurse including experience in obstetrics, patient education, and diabetes management.
  • Working knowledge of modern concepts of patient care.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, physicians, Medical Center personnel, governing agencies, and the general public.

NECESSARY SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Licensure to practice in the State of Michigan as a Registered Nurse.
  • Certification by the National Certification Board for Diabetes Education or 24 hours of training/preparation in the curriculum content areas. If not certified, must do so within 2 years of hire date.
