The Hershel "Woody" Williams VAMC is a fully accredited 80-bed acute medical and surgical care facility, offering primary care, outpatient mental health services, and subspecialty outpatient care. VA staffed community-based outpatient clinics are in Charleston, West Virginia, and Prestonsburg, Kentucky. In addition, outreach clinics are in Gallipolis, Ohio and Lenore, West Virginia.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
    [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
    (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
    Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Additional Requirement: Physician must be Board Certified / Board Eligible in Gastroenterology

Physical Requirements: Lifting up to 35 pounds, intermittently; moderate carrying (15-35 pounds), intermittently; lifting over 35 pounds with assistive devices in accordance with the Safe Patient Handling Policy except in emergent situations requiring prompt patient care; pulling, intermittently; pushing, intermittently; reaching above the shoulders, intermittently, both hands required; walking, intermittently; standing, intermittently; kneeling, intermittently; and repeated bending.

Responsibilities:

This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until April 17, 2026. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be October 30, 2025 with subsequent cut-off date every two weeks.

The VAMC also offers services to homeless Veterans through the Community Resource and Referral Center located in downtown Huntington, near community resources. A standalone Women's Health Clinic on campus provides comprehensive health care services to our female patients. Extensive use of community resources, as well as contract community nursing homes for post-hospitalization care, complement our Medical Center's treatment programs.

This Medical Center is the principal teaching facility for the Marshall University School of Medicine for undergraduate and postgraduate medical education.
  • The Physician is the Gastroenterology Department within the Medical Service and practices at the independent clinical level of practice.
  • The Physician has specialized knowledge of practice related to the study, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the digestive system.
  • This physician will perform or assist in related procedures.
  • Gastroenterology is the discipline whose providers study the normal function and diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver.
  • The Physician works as a member of the Gastroenterology Medical team at the Hershel "Woody" Williams campus of the Huntington VA Hospital. There may be sometimes that the clinician would have to visit a CBOC for the purpose of meetings or trainings.
  • There may be other duties as assigned or required.

Recruitment Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): Authorized

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm
