Job Title: Deputy Superintendent for Operations (K–12)
Position Summary
The Deputy Superintendent for Operations serves as a key member of the Superintendent’s executive leadership team and is responsible for the strategic planning, oversight, and management of all non-instructional operations of the school district. This includes facilities, transportation, safety, technology, food services, and other support services to ensure efficient, safe, and high-quality learning environments.
Primary Responsibilities
1. Operational Leadership
- Provide leadership and supervision of all district operational departments
- Develop and implement long-range operational plans aligned with district goals
- Ensure efficient use of resources to support student achievement
2. Facilities & Maintenance
- Oversee maintenance, custodial services, and capital improvement projects
- Lead planning for construction, renovation, and bond projects
- Ensure compliance with safety, health, and regulatory standards
3. Transportation
- Direct student transportation systems, including routing, safety, and fleet management
- Ensure compliance with state and federal transportation regulations
- Monitor efficiency and cost-effectiveness of services
4. School Safety & Security
- Lead district-wide safety planning and emergency preparedness
- Coordinate crisis response protocols and training
- Collaborate with local law enforcement and emergency agencies
5. Technology Services
- Oversee district IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, and instructional technology support
- Ensure reliable systems for learning, communication, and operations
- Guide long-term digital strategy
6. Food & Nutrition Services
- Supervise school nutrition programs
- Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations (e.g., USDA programs)
- Maintain financial sustainability of food services
7. Budget & Financial Oversight (Operations)
- Work with Chief Financial Officer on operational budgets
- Monitor expenditures and identify cost-saving opportunities in collaboration with Chief Financial Officer
- Collaborate with CFO/business office on financial planning
8. Policy & Compliance
- Ensure operational compliance with local, state, and federal laws
- Develop and enforce district policies related to operations
- Prepare reports for the Board of Education
9. Vendor & Contract Management
- Oversee procurement processes and vendor relationships
- Negotiate contracts for services and capital projects
- Ensure accountability and performance standards
10. Leadership & Personnel Management
- Supervise directors and department leaders
- Recruit, evaluate, and develop operational staff
- Foster a culture of accountability, service, and continuous improvement
- Steps in as needed in absence of Superintendent due to travel, illness, etc.
- Collaborates with Director of Human Resources on personnel issues.
11. Marketing & Communications
- Oversite of Director of Marketing and Communications
- Facilitate Community and Parent concerns above the building level
12. Health & Wellness
- Oversite of:
- Director of Facilities
- Director of Behavior Health and Wellness
- Corporation Nurse
- School Nurses
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Master’s degree required (Educational Leadership, Ed.S., or Doctorate preferred)
- Superintendent or district-level administrative licensure preferred/required (state dependent)
- 5–10 years of leadership experience in school district operations or related field
- Superintendent or Central Office leadership of 3 years preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong organizational and strategic planning skills
- Expertise in school operations, facilities, and budgeting
- Knowledge of school law, safety regulations, and compliance requirements
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities
- Ability to manage complex systems and large teams
Reporting Structure
- Reports directly to the Superintendent
Work Environment
- District-wide leadership role requiring travel between schools and facilities
- May require evening/weekend work for board meetings, emergencies, or major projects
