Structural Steel Fabricator / Welder
Position Summary
Hunter Metal Forge & Iron Works is looking for an experienced Structural Steel Fabricator / Welder to join our team.
This position is primarily shop-based and involves the layout, fabrication, welding, drilling, cutting, stud welding, and finishing of structural steel components. We are looking for someone who can read a set of shop drawings, understand what needs to be built, and fabricate parts accurately with limited supervision.

- Experience Required: Previous structural steel fabrication and welding experience is strongly preferred. This position is intended for an experienced fabricator who is comfortable laying out and building structural steel directly from shop drawings.
This is not an entry-level welding position. Applicants should have previous experience working with structural steel, including I-beams, tube steel, channel, angle, plate, and similar materials.
Primary Job Duties
The Structural Steel Fabricator / Welder will be expected to:
- Read and understand structural steel shop drawings and fabrication details
- Lay out I-beams, tube steel, channel, angle, plate, and other structural materials
- Accurately lay out hole locations, connection plates, clip angles, stiffeners, tabs, and other fabricated components
- Measure, mark, square, and verify material prior to cutting or welding
- Fabricate structural steel assemblies according to approved shop drawings
- Perform MIG / FCAW welding on structural steel
- Operate a beam saw to accurately cut structural members to required lengths and angles
- Drill and/or punch holes in structural steel according to drawings
- Operate magnetic drills and other drilling equipment
- Install / shoot welded headed studs where required
- Fit and weld plates, angles, tabs, stiffeners, connections, and miscellaneous steel components
- Grind, clean, and prepare fabricated steel as required
- Paint and touch up structural steel after fabrication
- Load, move, organize, and stage structural steel within the shop
- Verify completed parts against shop drawings before they leave the fabrication area
- Maintain an organized and safe work area
- Properly use and maintain shop tools and equipment
- Follow company safety procedures at all times
Welding Requirements
- Applicants should:Hold a current MIG / FCAW wire welding certification, or have the experience necessary to successfully complete our required weld test
- Be proficient with structural flux-cored welding
- Have experience welding with 1/16” wire
- Our primary structural wire is Hobart FabCO®/Hobart ARC-71, 1/16”
- Be capable of producing clean, consistent structural welds in the positions required for fabrication
- Understand basic weld symbols and welding requirements shown on shop drawings
- Additional structural welding certifications and experience with NR-232 / self-shielded flux-cored wire are a plus.

- Checking square, dimensions, elevations, and hole locations
- MIG / FCAW welding
- Cutting and drilling structural steel
- Using grinders, drills, impacts, saws, magnetic drills, and other common fabrication tools
- Candidates should understand that accurate layout is just as important as welding ability for this position.

Pay: $28.00 - $40.00 per hour
