What are the responsibilities and job description for the Art teacher (part-time maternity leave) position at Hunter College High School?
The Art Department at Hunter College High School, located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City, is looking for a maternity leave replacement for a part-time position. The anticipated opening is from February 2026 through January 2027.
The leave replacement will teach two 8th grade courses of combined art studio and art history. An ideal candidate would have a background in both art studio and art history. Experience with creating and adapting lesson plans is preferred.
Hunter College High School is a 7th – 12th grade program governed by the City University of New York, not the New York City Department of Education, and serve gifted students from all 5 boroughs. We offer a curriculum which blends art studio with art history.
8th grade art is a closer study of European art history (through the Renaissance) and a deeper investigation into art making techniques and academic traditions.
Responsibilities would include:
- Teaching course content to gifted 8th graders in a challenging, yet age-appropriate, manner
- Guiding students through art studio experiences and projects which relate to the art history discussed in class
- Assessing student knowledge based on art history discussions and evaluating student artwork – both in-process feedback and final evaluation
- Working collaboratively with other members of the department
- Maintaining the studio environment and managing materials in the classroom
