Hunter Business School is seeking an experienced and motivated Medical Assistant Externship Coordinator to join our Medical Assistant Program. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Medical Assisting, excellent communication and organizational skills, and a passion for helping students transition from the classroom into the healthcare workforce.
This position is responsible for coordinating and overseeing student externship experiences, maintaining strong relationships with clinical sites, monitoring student progress, and developing new externship opportunities throughout the community.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate and manage externship placements for Medical Assistant students.
- Maintain regular communication with students, externship site supervisors, and Medical Assistant faculty.
- Visit students at their externship sites to monitor their progress, address concerns, and ensure students are receiving appropriate hands-on experience.
- Conduct site visits and maintain positive relationships with existing clinical partners.
- Develop and establish new externship sites with physician offices, medical practices, clinics, hospitals, and other healthcare organizations.
- Make regular outreach calls and visits to prospective healthcare employers and clinical partners.
- Work with healthcare facilities to identify opportunities for student placements and potential employment.
- Ensure externship sites meet program and school requirements.
- Monitor student attendance, performance, professionalism, and completion of required externship hours.
- Address student or site concerns promptly and communicate issues to the appropriate school personnel.
- Maintain accurate externship records, documentation, and site information.
- Assist students with developing professional workplace skills, including communication, professionalism, patient interaction, and workplace expectations.
- Collaborate with Career Services to identify employment opportunities for students completing their externships.
- Assist with job leads and employer relationships that may lead to employment opportunities for graduates.
- Participate in Medical Assistant Program meetings and other school activities as needed.
- Maintain knowledge of current Medical Assistant practices, healthcare workplace expectations, and industry trends.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned based on the needs of the department. Flexibility and willingness to assist with departmental needs are important to this position.
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of recent experience working as a Medical Assistant is required.
- Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, or equivalent) preferred.
- Strong understanding of Medical Assistant duties and responsibilities in a clinical setting.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with healthcare providers and clinical offices.
- Comfortable making outreach calls and conducting in-person visits to healthcare facilities.
- Professional appearance and demeanor.
- Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with faculty and administrative staff.
- Must be comfortable traveling between externship sites and the school's campuses as needed.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation required.
