Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Equipment Operator to safely and efficiently operate a knuckle boom log loader to load and unload log trucks, trailers and railcars, sort and stage logs, maintain steady wood flow, and support daily woodyard operations. This position plays a critical role in ensuring safe yard activity, accurate log handling, and consistent delivery of fiber to mill operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safely load and unload log trucks and trailers using a knuckleboom loader.
- Communicate with truck drivers to ensure smooth and safe operations during loading/unloading.
- Verify load counts, species, and log quality per company standards.
- Sort logs by species, length, quality, or mill specification.
- Maintain orderly log decks, storage areas, and staging zones.
- Support wood flow to the mill by keeping equipment running efficiently and logs properly situated.
- Assist with scaling or measuring logs as required.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections and perform basic preventative maintenance.
- Follow all company safety practices.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Experience operating a knuckleboom loader or similar heavy equipment. Previous experience in sawmill, woodyard or logging preferred.
- Ability to safely lift, swing, sort, and handle logs of various sizes.
- Strong situational awareness and commitment to safe operation in high-traffic areas.
- Good communication skills and positive attitude.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Requirements:
Ability to sit or stand for extended periods while operating equipment. Ability to climb in and out of machinery safely. Capable of lifting and moving up to 50 pounds. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions with regular exposure to dust, noise and outdoor elements. May require weekend or evening hours based on operational needs.
