Organizational Relationship
or Line of Authority: Responsible to the Supervisor of Guidance who is jointly responsible to the building Principal and the Superintendent of Schools and/or his/her designees.
Statement of Duties:
- Provides comprehensive school counseling services that include education, prevention and intervention activities for all pupils in Grades 5-8.
- Develops and delivers classroom lessons on relevant topics that align to ASCA Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success (for example, conflict management, career awareness, friendship, anti-bullying and emotional regulation).
- Provides support and referrals for students and families to school and community resources for additional assistance.
- Works with Building Team Coordinators in preparing educational histories and implementing individual educational plans for special needs pupils.
- Develops and maintains a systematic process for delivering individual and/or small group counseling for students.
- Works as a member of a Student Support Team to address needs of students at risk.
- Willingness to become familiar with use of computer hardware and software as it becomes available as a guidance tool.
- Participate in building and department conferences in cooperation with teachers and administrators.
- Assist in maintaining up-to-date cumulative records of students.
- Develops and maintains appropriate communications with parents regarding their respective child’s progress. This will include telephone, written and parent conference efforts.
- Be available for appointments for meetings with parents and their children.
- Consult on a regular basis with classroom teachers regarding student progress.
- Establish and maintain communications with community-based agencies.
- Work with the Supervisor of Attendance in regard to CRA petitions, 51A’s, etc.
- Screen referrals for 504 eligibility and other assistance programs in conjunction with other designated school personnel.
- Performs other such duties as may be required by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee, and policies of the Haverhill School Committee.
- Assists in the transition of students from elementary to middle school.
Qualifications:
- Licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as a School Guidance Counselor PreK-8 - Required. Dual licensure School Counselor/School Adjustment Counselor- Preferred.
- Minimum of a Master’s Degree with a major in Counseling.
- Experience working with students at elementary or middle school level.
- Bilingual skills preferred.
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
