We are seeking a strategic and detail-oriented part-time Comptroller to support our financial health and guide our decision-making with sound fiscal insight.

The Comptroller will oversee and manage the firm’s financial operations on a part-time basis, working approximately 4 hours per day. This role is ideal for an experienced finance professional looking to make a high-impact contribution in a flexible work environment. The Comptroller will play a key role in approving large financial transactions, tracking revenue, analyzing expenses, and creating clear, actionable financial reports.

The Comptroller at Hunking Law will manage the firm’s financial operations on a part-time basis, with duties including reviewing and approving financial transactions, monitoring daily business expenses, developing and maintaining financial tracking systems, preparing and presenting monthly financial reports, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. This role also involves collaborating with the Office Manager and firm leadership to align financial planning with operational goals, creating visual dashboards to reflect business performance, and offering strategic recommendations based on financial analysis and projections. The ideal candidate will demonstrate attention to detail, critical thinking, and a high level of professionalism, along with proficiency in financial software such as QuickBooks or Excel. Strong communication skills are essential, as the Comptroller will present financial insights during monthly staff meetings and must be able to translate complex financial data into clear, actionable information. Dependability, discretion in handling confidential information, and the ability to meet deadlines are key, and experience in a law firm or service-based industry is a plus.

Full Job Description

Essential Functions: All duties are performed under the supervision of a licensed attorney.

  • Review and approve significant financial transactions and expenditures.
  • Monitor day-to-day business expenses and ensure adherence to budgetary guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain financial tracking systems, including detailed breakdowns of spending and fund allocation.
  • Create and update visual charts and dashboards to reflect business performance metrics.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports detailing revenue, expenses, and overall financial health.
  • Present financial reports and insights during monthly staff meetings to keep the team informed and aligned.
  • Provide strategic recommendations to leadership based on financial analysis and projections.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations and best practices.
  • Collaborate with the Office Manager and other departments to align financial planning with operational goals.

Knowledge, Education, Skills, and Abilities:

Must Have:

  • Bachelors and stable work history.
  • Proven experience as Comptroller, financial executive, or senior accountant.
  • Strong understanding of accounting, financial principles, and forecasting.
  • Proficiency in financial software (e.g., QuickBooks, Excel, or similar).
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Comfortable presenting financial data in an accessible and engaging way.
  • Ability to translate complex financial data into clear and actionable insights.
  • Law firm or service-based industry experience is a plus.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong professional communication skills (in person, via telephone and in writing)

Must be able to use effectively:

  • Work in stressful, fast-paced, deadline-driven work environment.
  • Organize, categorize and summarize extensive information and research.
  • Use Google docs and the Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Access. Bonus points if the applicant has experience with WordPerfect.
  • Master internal software, including investigative databases and billing system.

Work Context: Physical Requirements, must be able to:

  • Perform seated work at a computer workstation for four to eight hours per day, along with additional office tasks and duties related to courtroom and other legal proceedings.
  • Travel between offices, client locations and other areas where business is conducted throughout the workday.
  • Work a standard part-time office schedule, typically between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, with additional hours, (including earlier or later, as well as weekends) required on occasion.
