Deckhand

Position Summary: 

Under the supervision of the Captain, the Deckhand plays a key role in ensuring an outstanding guest experience while maintaining the safety and comfort of all passengers. This position assists the captain with daily cleaning, stocking, and weekly maintenance of the vessel and actively participates in all drills and training exercises.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Safety of passengers: always on the look out for people running, jumping, standing too close to rails. Making sure hazards are clear of walkways and thresholds are marked
• Cleaning: Vessel needs to be cleaned at the beginning of day, between trips, and at the end of the day. Special procedures need to take place in cleaning if there has been an incident or if an ill person has been on the vessel. Heads are to be kept clean throughout the day as well as shore restrooms.
• Tying up vessel, performing drills up to US Coast Guard standards
• Engine room checks: Safety of the machinery in the engine room relies heavily on the deckhands observations during checks. They are to write down all gauge numbers and use trained skills to detect if something is amiss. Reporting to the captain after each engine room check is crucial.
• Ticket Sales: Have competent skills in order to sell, write, and troubleshoot credit card issues, utilize Fare Harbor to process ticket sales
• Conversing with passengers: Taking photos, making guests feel welcome, listen to people as they share about their experiences in Alaska. Answer questions and make them feel like they are on a once in a lifetime trip.
• Speak over microphone opening and closing safety speeches, as well as a one hour long natural interpretation during cruises.
• Must pass a security background check and be enrolled in DOT drug testing program
• First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain)
• Any other duties as assigned by management

Physical Requirements & Work Environment: 

• High school completion or equivalent
• Minimum age of 18 required
• Must be eligible to work in the United States
• Must be comfortable performing credit card transactions for onboard ticket sales
• Ability to work independently with supervision while achieving daily goals
• Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds
• Ability to stand/walk/work on feet for a minimum of 8 hours per day
• Required to drive an hour along the Seward Hwy to and from work
• Must be comfortable working outside all day long in the elements; sun, rain or wind
• Need to be mobile and limber enough to crawl through tight voids, go up and down ladders, walk over uneven surface
• Need to be available five days a week for 10 or more hours a day. Extra overtime may be required either prior to regular start time or after, for regulatory maintenance and fueling
