Description

The Lifestyle & Fitness Coordinator supports resident wellness by planning, coordinating, and leading fitness, wellness, and lifestyle programming for residents across levels of living. This role promotes physical activity, balance, strength, mobility, social engagement, and overall well-being through person-directed programs, group classes, individual support, and safe use of fitness equipment. The position works directly with residents to understand interests, abilities, and wellness goals; develops appropriate fitness and activity offerings; encourages participation; and supports a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment consistent with HumanGood’s mission, values, and philosophy of person-directed care.

This is a part-time position, 15-20 hours/week

Pay Range: $21-$23/hr. based on experience

Primary Duties & Essential Functions

The following list includes essential functions that are fundamental to the role. The organization will engage in an interactive process to provide reasonable accommodation for qualified individuals with disabilities in accordance with applicable law.

  • Meet with residents to understand interests, physical abilities, wellness goals, and participation preferences in order to recommend appropriate fitness and lifestyle activities.
  • Lead group fitness, strength, balance, mobility, stretching, walking, aquatic, or other wellness classes, as appropriate to the community’s programs, equipment, and resident needs.
  • Develop and support resident-centered exercise and wellness plans that promote safe physical activity, independence, social engagement, and everyday well-being.
  • Educate and encourage residents regarding fitness participation, safe movement, physical self-management, and wellness-related goals.
  • Plan, coordinate, promote, and participate in lifestyle and activity programs, which may include educational programs, games, creative activities, social events, outings, and wellness-focused events.
  • Prepare and maintain activity and fitness calendars, schedules, sign-ups, participation records, and related documentation.
  • Encourage resident participation in group and individual programs, including adapting activities for residents who may not attend larger group settings
  • Inspect fitness areas and equipment for safe operating condition; report maintenance, safety, or equipment concerns in accordance with community procedures.
  • Provide instruction to residents and team members on safe and proper use of fitness equipment and activity materials.
  • Support compliance with applicable community policies, safety expectations, documentation practices, and regulatory requirements related to resident activities and wellness programming.
  • Coordinate with activity assistants, volunteers, or other team members supporting programs, including assigning routine tasks, providing direction during activities, and helping maintain program standards.
  • Assist with volunteer coordination, orientation, and scheduling as assigned.
  • Conduct or assist with activity documentation audits, quality reviews, or program evaluations as assigned.
  • Attend required meetings, in-service training, and continuing education programs.
  • Conduct work in a safe manner and in compliance with the community’s safety program, infection control practices, and resident rights requirements.
  • Provide courteous, professional, and responsive service to residents, families, visitors, vendors, and team members.

Decision Authority & Scope

  • Works under general supervision and within established policies, procedures, budgets, safety guidelines, and program expectations.
  • Exercises judgment in adapting fitness and activity programs to resident interests, abilities, participation levels, and safety considerations.
  • Provides routine direction to activity assistants, volunteers, or team members supporting programs but does not typically have full management authority for hiring, performance management, compensation decisions, or corrective action.
  • May recommend program changes, equipment needs, supply purchases, or scheduling adjustments to the supervisor.
  • Escalates resident health, safety, behavioral, equipment, staffing, regulatory, or family concerns to the appropriate supervisor or clinical/community leader.
  • Role is primarily hands-on program coordination and resident engagement, not a department head, clinical rehabilitation, or licensed therapy role.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree or coursework in fitness, exercise science, kinesiology, recreation, gerontology, health education, recreation therapy, social work, psychology, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience.
  • One or more years of experience leading fitness, wellness, recreation, activities, or resident programming, preferably with older adults.
  • Ability to lead group activities and fitness programs safely and effectively for residents with varying abilities and interests.
  • Basic understanding of fitness equipment safety, group instruction, resident engagement, and activity planning.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with residents, families, visitors, volunteers, and team members.
  • Basic computer skills sufficient to complete calendars, schedules, documentation, participation records, and routine communications.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform job duties and communicate with residents and team members.
  • CPR and First Aid certification required when assigned first-responder responsibilities or when required by community policy.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings, weekends, holidays, or special events, based on community needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in exercise science, kinesiology, recreation, gerontology, health education, recreation therapy, or related field.
  • Two or more years of experience developing and leading wellness, fitness, recreation, or life enrichment programs for older adults.
  • Experience working in senior living, long-term care, assisted living, memory support, skilled nursing, wellness programming, or a related setting.
  • Fitness or wellness certification through ACSM, ACE, NSCA, AFAA/NASM, SilverSneakers, or similar recognized organization.
  • State activity leader certification or ability to obtain certification, where required for skilled nursing or applicable levels of care.
  • Experience coordinating volunteers or providing routine direction to activity assistants or program support staff.
  • Experience with balance, fall-prevention, strength, mobility, aquatic fitness, or adaptive exercise programming for older adults.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed in fitness rooms, activity spaces, resident areas, offices, outdoor spaces, vehicles, and other community settings.
  • Regularly interacts with residents across levels of living, including individuals with physical, cognitive, sensory, or mobility limitations.
  • Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, demonstrating exercises, setting up activity spaces, moving supplies, and assisting with program materials.
  • Requires the ability to demonstrate safe body mechanics and fitness movements appropriate to the class or activity being led.
  • May assist residents with positioning, mobility-related support, or participation in activities, consistent with training, policy, and role scope.
  • May push wheelchairs, move activity supplies, handle fitness equipment, transport program materials, and assist with setup and cleanup of events or outings.
  • May use fitness equipment, audio/visual equipment, kitchen or activity equipment, office equipment, carts, vehicles, and related program materials.
  • May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, wet surfaces, moderate noise, cleaning products, infectious disease risks, and other conditions common to a senior living environment.
  • Must follow safety procedures, infection control practices, resident rights requirements, and community policies.
