The Humane Society of West Michigan is looking for a seasonal Summer Camp Counselor for June - August of 2025!
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent; with a strong preference for advanced education, associates or bachelor’s in a related field
- First Aide Certified a plus
- Ability to work Monday – Friday 8:30AM – 5:30PM
- Experience working regularly with groups of children ages 4 – 17
- Exceptional customer service skills over the phone and in person, with our campers, parents and staff
- Comfortable with large groups of kids, animals and noise
- Comfortable working with neuro divergent children
- Highly-organized and efficient work practices (e.g. Seeks to proactively anticipate job related needs and to address them immediately.)
- Friendly and outgoing personality that communicates a positive attitude within and outside the workplace
- Flexible work schedule that will adjust for working nights and weekends as needed
- Ability to be reliable, responsible, timely and accountable
- Ability to follow instructions and stay on task to ensure the safety of animals, others and self
- Willingness to create and maintain a clean, healthy and safe shelter environment
- Ability to work independently and with others to foster a positive and healthy work environment
- Willingness to work with animals of any species, breed and size without prejudice

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with daily activities of camp attendees including crafts, animal time, lunch, etc.
- Communicate with Humane Education Coordinator on the needs of the kids and animals
- Lead a group of 5 – 45 campers daily in pre-planned activities
- Communicate with parents during pick-up and drop-off
- Handle animals coming to and from camper interaction time
- Watch for concerns with campers or animals
- Uphold safe animal handling practices for self and campers
- Communicate effectively with campers and mediate between campers
- Assist in developing and implementing education curriculum as needed
- Oversee and assist junior counselors and/or other camp volunteers
- Preform other duties as assigned by the Humane Education Coordinator and/or the Director of Community Programs to meet the needs of the organization.

Physical Demands
- Work requires lifting and carrying animals and items that weigh up to 40 pounds. Will be assisted by other staff members with animals and items weighing over 40 pounds.
- Will be required to walk or stand for extended periods of time. Will frequently work in a bent position.
