Pay: $$60.00 – 80.00 per hour increasing to $90 per hour if/when expanded to include surgeries.
Schedule: Approximately 8- 10 hours per week initially, with the opportunity to expand to approximately 16-24 hours per week as our shelter medical program grows.

The Humane Society of Pagosa Springs (HSPS) is seeking a compassionate, collaborative, and mission-driven veterinarian to serve as our Shelter Veterinarian. This position offers a unique opportunity to help shape the future of shelter veterinary care in our community while improving the lives of homeless animals.

Initially, this position will serve as the shelter's Supervising Veterinarian, providing the veterinary oversight required to maintain compliance with Colorado PACFA regulations while supporting the health and welfare of the animals in our care. As HSPS completes construction of its planned surgical suite, this position will expand into a broader shelter medicine role, including high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeries and leadership of our growing medical program.

Position Summary

The Shelter Veterinarian serves as the veterinary medical leader for the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs. The position provides medical oversight for shelter animals, consults with shelter staff on treatment plans, ensures compliance with PACFA standards, and supports the organization's mission through high-quality veterinary care.

Initially, the position will average 8-10 hours per week. As the HSPS surgical suite becomes operational, the position is expected to approximately 16 -24 hours per week to include routine spay/neuter surgeries and expanded shelter medicine services.

Essential Responsibilities

Shelter Medical Oversight

• Serve as the organization's Supervising Veterinarian in accordance with Colorado PACFA requirements.
• Conduct routine exams of shelter animals to evaluate overall health, welfare, and medical needs.
• Provide medical guidance for injured, ill, or behaviorally compromised animals.
• Review and assist with medical treatment plans, diagnostics, medications, and vaccinations.
• Be available for urgent medical consultation by phone regarding shelter animal emergencies.
• Assist in developing and maintaining shelter medical protocols and best practices.
• Collaborate closely with the Executive Director, Shelter Manager, Medical Supervisor.
• Comfortable working in an animal shelter environment and training staff to assist and watch for medical concerns.

Community Services

• Conduct two low-cost community vaccination clinics each year.
• Participate in community outreach and educational opportunities as appropriate.

Future Surgical Program

Upon completion of a new HSPS surgical suite, responsibilities can expand to include:

• Performing routine shelter spay and neuter surgeries.
• Overseeing surgical protocols and patient safety.
• Supervising the shelter's growing medical program.
• Qualifications
• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) from an accredited veterinary college.
• Colorado veterinary license or ability to obtain licensure before employment. (Reimbursed by HSPS)
• DEA registration (or ability to obtain).(Reimbursed by HSPS)
• Experience in small companion animal medicine.
• Shelter medicine, high-volume spay/neuter, or nonprofit veterinary experience helpful but not required.
• Strong communication and collaborative leadership skills.
• Passion for animal welfare and shelter medicine.
• Commitment to compassionate, Fear Free–informed handling whenever possible.

Compensation & Benefits

We can offer:

• $60 - $80 per hours $90 with surgeries
• Flexible scheduling, typically one or two days each week.
• Continuing Education (CE) allowance.
• Reimbursement for Colorado veterinary license renewal and approved professional dues.
• Light after-hours emergency duty and on-call responsibilities outside of scheduled shelter support (mostly to answer staff concerns / questions)
