Job Title: Veterinarian Technician (Shelter Medicine)
Location: Humane Society of Lebanon County
Schedule: Full Time, Monday through Friday. Weekends as needed.
Reports To: Shelter Operations Manager
Position Summary
The Vet Technician plays a vital role in the health, welfare, and quality of life of animals within the shelter environment. This position supports the shelter animals by providing skilled nursing care, assisting with medical procedures, monitoring feline and canine health, and ensuring humane, low-stress handling and treatment. The ideal candidate is highly dependable, detail-oriented, compassionate, and experienced in animal-focused care within a fast-paced setting.
Key Responsibilities
Medical & Clinical Care
- Assist with examinations, diagnostics, and medical procedures
- Administer vaccines, medications, fluids, and treatments as prescribed
- Monitor for signs of illness, injury, stress, or behavioral changes
- Perform injections, and sample collection when appropriate
- Maintain accurate medical records and treatment logs
- Assist our Shelter Veterinarian on surgery days
- Assist with daily general cat care, cleaning and feedings
Shelter Health & Disease Management
- Follow and enforce shelter medicine protocols and infection control procedures
- Assist with intake exams, triage, isolation, and treatment of animals with infectious diseases
- Participate in population health management and daily health rounds
- Support enrichment and stress-reduction practices to improve feline well-being
Animal Handling & Welfare
- Use animal-friendly, fear-free handling techniques at all times
- Provide compassionate care to aniamls of varying temperaments, health statuses, and backgrounds
- Support behavioral observations and communicate concerns
Collaboration & Support
- Work closely with veterinarians, animal care staff, behavior teams, foster families and adoption counselors
- Assist with training staff and volunteers on basic animal health and handling
- Communicate clearly and professionally with team members regarding medical cases
Facility & Equipment
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of medical areas and equipment
- Ensure proper use, storage, and inventory of medical supplies
Qualifications
Required
- Demonstrated experience working with animals in a clinical or shelter setting
- Strong knowledge of animal anatomy, common diseases, and medications
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume shelter environment
- Excellent attention to detail and time management skills
- Compassionate, dependable, and emotionally resilient
Preferred
- Experience in shelter medicine or high-volume spay/neuter clinic
- Fear Free or Low-Stress Handling certification
- Experience with infectious disease management in a shelter setting
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods
- Comfortable handling cats of all sizes, temperaments, and medical conditions
Work Environment
This position works primarily in a shelter medical setting with exposure to animals, cleaning agents, and medical equipment. Flexibility in scheduling, including weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts, may be required.
