The Humane Society of Henderson County is seeking a professional, dependable, and highly motivated Animal Control Officer to uphold public safety and enforce local animal control ordinances. Responsibilities
- Enforce city and county animal control laws and ordinances through patrols and investigations.
- Respond promptly to calls involving stray, injured, aggressive, or nuisance animals.
- Investigate animal bite cases, neglect, and cruelty complaints; issue citations and prepare reports for legal proceedings.
- Testify in court as required.
- Safely apprehend, transport, and care for animals, including those that may be aggressive or rabid.
- Perform euthanasia of animals in accordance with established procedures (certification required; training provided if not currently certified).
- Prepare detailed, accurate, and professional reports documenting investigations, incidents, enforcement actions, and court-related matters.
- Maintain accurate records, reports, and logs of all activities and actions taken.
- Operate and maintain assigned animal control vehicles, radios, and equipment.
- Respond to after-hours emergencies as part of an on-call rotation, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Assist with shelter operations as needed, including intake, preventive care, and community education.
- Work collaboratively with law enforcement agencies, shelter staff, veterinarians, and members of the public.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
- Reliable transportation required.
- Must be able to meet requirements to be sworn in as an Animal Control Officer for Henderson County.
- Must not have been convicted of a felony.
- Must live within 30 minutes of the Henderson Humane Society for timely emergency response.
- Prior animal control, law enforcement, or related experience preferred.
- Knowledge of Kentucky, Henderson County, and City of Henderson animal ordinances preferred.
- Ability to safely handle and restrain animals weighing up to 200 lbs.
- Skill in decision-making relative to animal law violations and public safety situations.
- Ability to use computers and report management systems proficiently
- Excellent written communication and report-writing skills.
- Strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work professionally and effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to work effectively under stressful and emotionally challenging conditions.
- Willingness to obtain euthanasia certification if not already certified.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and willingness to pursue additional job-related training, certifications, and education.
- Must be willing and able to participate in a seven (7) consecutive day on-call rotation.
Schedule
- Monday – Friday: 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM
- On-call rotation requiring availability for seven (7) consecutive days, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, on a rotating basis (typically every 3 weeks)
