1. Customer Service–Based Adoptions
- Greet and engage all potential adopters in a friendly, timely manner
- Ask open-ended questions to understand adopter needs, lifestyle, and expectations
- Match adopters with appropriate animals based on personality, behavior, and home fit
- Educate adopters on individual animals, including temperament and care needs
- Facilitate safe and positive meet-and-greets
- Support adopters through the decision-making process to ensure successful placements
- Process adoption through Chameleon
- Review all adoption paperwork with the adopter

2. Customer Service–Based Surrender Intakes
- Provide a compassionate, non-judgmental experience for individuals surrendering pets
- Gather detailed behavioral and lifestyle history to support rehoming success
- Ask thoughtful, open-ended questions to better understand the animal
- Offer guidance or resources when appropriate
- Ensure a smooth and respectful intake process
- Gather previous veterinary records for the medical team
- Call previous veterinarian if owner does not have them present
- Provide previous medical records to the Assistant Director of Medical and Animal care or Senior Director of Animal Care Operations
3. Animal Health Monitoring & Communication
- Monitor the health of all animals in HSCC care daily
- Observe for signs of illness or abnormal behavior (appetite changes, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, respiratory signs, etc.)
- Document and communicate observations clearly (shift logs, software notes, team communication tools)
- Ensure continuity of care through clear shift-to-shift communication
- Provide proper signage as needed or directed by the Assistant Director of Medical and Animal Care
4. Behavior Support & Enrichment
- Provide daily enrichment (toys, socialization, sensory stimulation)
- Rotate enrichment items regularly to maintain engagement
- Identify signs of stress, fear, or overstimulation
- Adjust handling and environment to reduce stress
- Support positive interactions and socialization
- Communicate medical/behavioral concerns to appropriate team members
5. Cleaning & Sanitation of Animal Areas
- Clean and maintain cages/kennels
- Ensure all small animals and livestock are provided hay, hiding enclosure, proper food, and water
- Ensure safe, low-stress handling of animals during cleaning
- Maintain proper dishwashing and laundry flow
- Ensure all items (bowls, litter boxes, enrichment) are properly cleaned and disinfected
6. Facility Cleanliness & Presentation
- Maintain all public-facing areas in a clean, organized, and odor-free condition
- Perform spot cleaning throughout the day as needed
- Ensure animal areas are visually appealing and adoption-ready
- Keep cages/kennels organized with clean bedding and appropriate setup
7. Adoption Readiness & Animal Placement Support
- Ensure animals are clean, comfortable, and ready for adoption at all times
- Monitor and communicate when animals are ready to move through the system
- Adjust status accordingly when animals are released from stray and/or medical holds
8. Fecal Collection & Submission
- Collect fecal samples as directed by the Medical Team
- Ensure samples are fresh, properly labeled, and handled appropriately
- Submit fecal samples to IDEXX in a timely manner
- Results will be recorded by the Assistant Director of Medical and Animal Care or the Senior Director of Animal Care Operations
9. Biosecurity & Disease Prevention
- Follow all cleaning and PPE protocols for designated areas
- Proper signage on kennels for cages requiring to be cleaned first and/or last
- Maintain separation between isolation and healthy populations
- Medical Team is responsible for Isolation areas
- Prevent cross-contamination through proper handling, cleaning tools, and hygiene
- Proper signage on kennels for cages requiring to be cleaned first and/or last
- Follow disinfectant protocols, including proper contact times
- Rescue MUST have 10 minutes of contact time during cage disinfecting process
10. Supply Maintenance & Organization
- Keep cleaning carts in public areas fully stocked
- Monitor and restock supplies from storage areas
- Maintain organization and cleanliness of storage spaces
- Supply carts should be disinfected weekly
- Communicate low inventory needs proactively
- Medical Team will be responsible for inventory of medical supplies
11. Donation Management
- Maintain and organize the donation cart multiple times throughout the day
- Sort donations appropriately:
- Items for shelter use
- Items for employee cart
- Items for sharing shed
- Ensure donation area remain clean and does not become overcrowded
12. Volunteer Engagement
- Engage with volunteers in a positive, supportive manner
- Provide guidance, direction, and clarification as needed
- Communicate concerns directly with the Volunteer Coordinator
- Help ensure volunteers have a productive and enjoyable experience
- Support volunteer involvement while maintaining safety and protocol compliance
13. Facility & Safety Awareness
- Ensure all enclosures, kennels, cages, and latches are secure
- Report maintenance or safety concerns promptly to the Senior Director of Animal Care Operations or Senior Director of Animal Control Operations
- Maintain safe animal handling practices
- Ensure safety for staff, volunteers, visitors, and animals
14. Daily Operations & Time Management
- Complete all assigned tasks efficiently and thoroughly
- Prioritize animals with higher needs (puppies/kittens, URI/Quarantine, stressed animals)
- Monitor population flow and communicate capacity concerns to the Assistant Director of Medical and Animal Care
- Communicate Foster needs with the Foster Coordinator
- Adjust workflow based on daily shelter needs
- Communicate when assistance is needed to complete tasks
15. Team Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with Animal Care, Medical, Behavior, and Leadership teams
- Communicate clearly and professionally
- Support team members to ensure all areas and responsibilities are completed
- Remain receptive to feedback and direction
Overall Expectation
Animal Care staff are responsible not only for daily husbandry, but for supporting animal welfare, shelter operations, and the overall experience of adopters, volunteers, and visitors.
Pay: From $16.00 per hour
