Job Description

JOB TITLE: Program Aide

DEPARTMENT: Early Childhood Education

PROGRAM: CSPP

STATUS: Full-Time - Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Child Development Supervisor

HOURS PER WEEK: 35

TERM: 10 Months

LOCATION: South Gate, CA

The Organization

Human Services Association (HSA) is a private nonprofit agency whose principal mission is to provide families with compassionate and comprehensive care to promote wellness and build strong communities. HSA was founded in Bell Gardens in 1940 and today, HSA serves over 20,000 clients annually on a non-sectarian basis with a range of services that addresses the unique and shared needs of clients of all ages.

Program Overview

Our Early Childhood Education Department provides services to 600 children over three distinct programs (Early Head Start, Head Start and State Preschool) at ten school sites. The California State Preschool Program provides a pre-school experience for children ages 3 to 5 in the cities of South Gate and Huntington Park. The Early Head Start Program is a federally funded program that provides a home based and center based program for pregnant women and children ages 0-3 that reside in zip codes of 90201 and 90280. The Head Start Program offers a comprehensive child development program for low-income preschoolers ages three to five years old that reside in zip code 90280.

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Child Development Supervisor and guidance from the Lead Teacher, the Program Aide will be responsible for the meal preparation, meal delivery, and other CACFP requirements and support the site by following educational instruction and providing instruction with the Lead Teacher’s guidance. The program aide will also support covering breaks, setting up the classrooms and ensuring the health and safety of children and families is maintained at all times. Ensures all program activities in all service areas and ensure the program meets or exceeds funding source requirements based on the performance standards, Title 22, and title V regulations. Adheres and complies with program regulations and other relevant regulations in all ECE programs.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Child Supervision & Development
  • Supervise and coordinate curriculum activities as assigned by Lead Teacher.
  • Implement and plan school readiness and curriculum activities as directed by the Lead Teacher.
  • Conduct and coordinate small group and large group activities.
  • Assist children with physical, emotional needs and overall development.
  • Provide on-going supervision of indoor and outdoor play areas.
  • Actively participate in all child activities.
  • Provide nurturing care and guidance to each child.
  • Assist in conducting daily health checks of each child.
  • Ensure the health and safety of all children and parents in the program.
  • Health, Nutrition & Safety
  • Participate in fire, earthquake, and lockdown drills.
  • Ensure the kitchen area and site is clean: cleaning, sweeping, wiping, trash disposal, and meal prep.
  • Assist in the implementation of nutrition and health activities and complete meal counts. (listed twice in original)
  • Identify and report any suspected incidents of child abuse (following the Mandated Reporter Guidelines).

  • Report to work at scheduled times and maintain good attendance.
  • Participate with a positive attitude and behavior in all program activities.
  • Communicate with children, families, and staff in a respectful and culturally sensitive manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality of children, families, and employees of HSA.
  • Work as a member of the agency team by promoting the mission and philosophy of HSA.
  • Model the Standard of Conduct Policy in all interactions.
  • Support and act in accordance with the Agency’s and program’s mission/vision statements and philosophy.
  • Assist with other tasks as needed, in line with the team philosophy.
  • Community Engagement & Professional Development
  • Participate in at least 1 recruitment activities and/or community events, including nights and weekends.
  • Represent HSA at community and professional functions, as needed.
  • Attend department, agency, and community meetings and trainings.
  • Continue professional growth through classes, training programs, workshops, and/or conferences.
  • Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and travel locally or out of the service area for trainings.
  • Other Duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor and/or Department Director.


Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Knowledge and experience working with Head Start Performance Standards, Title V, Title 22, CACFP Regulations and other State and Federal Regulations
  • Knowledge of child growth and development.
  • Work effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio-economic, and cultural backgrounds, and those with disabilities and special needs.
  • Participate in a positive team atmosphere.
  • Be patient, able to resolve conflicts, gentle, loving, kind, creative, and resourceful.
  • Use excellent problem solving, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Be detailed and multi-task with a strong desire to succeed.
  • Cope well with stress.
  • Organized and able to successfully meet daily objectives; have the ability to lead team atmosphere; have mediation and negotiation skills; possess effective conflict resolution skills.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing using correct English (spelling, grammar, vocabulary and punctuation).
  • Preferred Bilingual (English/Spanish); effective oral and written communication.


Education And Experience

Option 1:

  • Possess a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential.
  • Possess or meets the requirements to apply for and Associate Teacher Permit with the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience working with preschool children, infants and toddlers


OR

Option 2

  • A minimum of 12 semester units of course work in early childhood education or child development (excluding field work), including at least one course of at least three semester units in each of the following core area:
  • Child/human growth and development.
  • Child, family, and community, or child and family relations
  • Programs/curriculum.
  • Possess or meets the requirements to apply for and Assistant Teacher Permit with the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience working with preschool children, infants and toddlers


Licensing/Certification Requirements

  • Possess or meets the requirements to apply for and Assistant Teacher Permit or higher.
  • Occasional driving is required.
  • Must provide own vehicle, valid California driver license and proof of full insurance coverage.
  • First Aid certification, Child CPR certification.
  • Health screening:
  • Physical
  • Negative tuberculosis screen (TB)(required).
  • TDAP or DTAP clearance (required)
  • MMR Clearance (required)
  • Must pass criminal background check including LiveScan (fingerprinting)


Work Environment/Physical Demands

  • Work in moderate noise levels and non-smoking environment
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds independently
  • Frequently involves sitting, standing, walking, squatting, bending, and climbing stairs (as needed)
  • Occasionally may be required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Must be able to speak and hear clearly to communicate effectively
  • Constantly operates a computer, keyboard, and other various office machinery
  • Majority of job duties are performed onsite; however, visits to different sites may be required

In accordance with California law, the expected pay range for this position is posted with this position. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.
