Job Summary:
The On-Call Substitute Teacher plays an essential role in providing a smooth educational experience when regular teachers are absent. These substitutes carefully follow the detailed lesson plans left by the classroom teachers, creating a structured and engaging environment for students. They are responsible for maintaining a safe and orderly learning space, effectively managing classroom interactions while encouraging students to stay focused and motivated.
Assignments can vary greatly, reflecting the different needs of various grade levels and subjects, from elementary to high school, and may last from a single day to several weeks. Each assignment offers a new opportunity to assist students in their daily learning, helping them navigate their lessons and complete tasks successfully. The flexibility and adaptability of the On-Call Substitute Teacher are crucial to meeting the diverse needs of the school community.
Hours:
7:30 am - 2:45 pm - Middle School and High School
7:30 am - 3:00 pm - Elementary School
Compensation
- Daily/Per-Diem Substitutes: Paid per day.
- Long-Term Substitutes: Begin at the per-diem substitute rate for the first 10 consecutive days in the same classroom assignment. Starting on the 11th consecutive day, the role transitions to the higher long-term substitute pay rate.
Responsibilities:
The successful candidate for this position will:
- Deliver teacher-prepared lessons across multiple subjects and grade levels.
- Maintain a safe, respectful, and engaging classroom environment.
- Build quick, positive connections with students to keep them motivated.
- Adapt to a wide range of classroom settings and needs.
- Provide push-in support when not covering for absences, assisting with small groups, activities, and classroom instruction.
- Communicate effectively with teachers and administrators about student progress and classroom experiences.

Qualifications- Per-Diem/Daily Substitutes:
- Education: Associate's Degree OR at least two years of undergraduate credits (minimum of 48).
- Ability to take the initiative and work independently
- Ability to de-escalate behaviors; Calm, neutral demeanor
- Reliable and well-organized with sound judgment
- Effective oral and written communication
- Deep commitment to DEI and anti-bias, anti-racist approaches to education and service.
- Candidates are subject to background checks, including CORI clearance and fingerprinting.
- Current authorization to work in the United States
- Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.
Qualifications- Long Term Substitutes:
- Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university
- Master's Degree from an accredited college or university (Preferred)
- Hold a Massachusetts Teaching License (Preferred)
- Ability to take the initiative and work independently
- Ability to de-escalate behaviors; Calm, neutral demeanor
- Reliable and well-organized with sound judgment
- Effective oral and written communication

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
The majority of work is performed in a school or classroom environment, which usually has a moderate noise level. Regular attendance is necessary; absences should be rare and in alignment with district attendance and punctuality standards.
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the teacher is frequently required to kneel, stoop, bend, and crouch. The teacher is periodically required to stand while talking and listening. The teacher is occasionally required to sit, walk, lift, or carry.
Salary : $115 - $175
