Job Title: Associate Computer Security Engineer
Duration: Long-Term Contract
Location: Aiken, SC (On-Site, limited telework)
Short Summary about Job:
Seeking a motivated and detail-oriented entry-level Cyber Security Professional with a focus on cloud security authorizations, compliance activities, and working directly with FedRAMP applications. This role is ideal for candidates who are eager to learn, enjoy research, and want to build a career supporting Department of Energy (DOE)/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) cybersecurity programs. The successful candidate will work closely with experienced cybersecurity staff and receive mentorship in DOE, NNSA, and Environmental Management (EM) cybersecurity policies, standards, and governance processes.
Required Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in an IT-related discipline (e.g., Information Technology, Computer Technology, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering); or
- Non-related Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of proven performance in a related assignment; or
- Associate’s Degree in an IT-related discipline with 2 years of proven performance in a related assignment; or
- Non-related Associate’s Degree with 4 years of proven performance in a related assignment; or
- High school diploma with at least 6 years of equivalent knowledge and experience.
Experience/Skills:
- Knowledge of computer and network digital systems used in business or process applications. (Required)
- Familiarity with cloud security concepts or compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP, RMF, or NIST SP 800-series. (Required)
- Knowledge of basic cybersecurity principles, protections, or frameworks (e.g., NIST). (Required)
- Strong written communication and composition skills. (Required)
- Demonstrated willingness to learn new technologies, frameworks, and regulatory environments. (Required)
- Ability to conduct thorough research and synthesize findings. (Required)
- Ability to work on-site with limited teleworking options. (Required)
- Must be able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical personnel and accept guidance from senior technical staff. (Required)
Other Required Qualifications:
- Candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE “Q” security clearance. An active DOE clearance is not initially required to perform assigned duties; the selected candidate will be notified when to apply based on specific work assignments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Exposure to working in an enterprise IT environment.
- Experience working on collaborative technical or research projects.
- A proactive desire to stay current with evolving cloud technologies and cybersecurity trends.
- Ability to think critically and provide actionable guidance to technical or compliance-based challenges.
- Educational or work-related experience with Microsoft cloud services (Azure, M365, etc.) or other major SaaS platforms.
- Active DOE “Q” clearance preferred.
Miscellaneous/Additional Information
- Under regular supervision, assists with the investigation, design, and development of software and/or hardware security. Supports security through designing, implementing, and evaluating measures tied to the NIST Core Cyber Framework: Identify, Detect, Respond, and Recover.
- Additional duties: supporting cloud security authorization activities and FedRAMP documentation; conducting research on cybersecurity standards and DOE/NNSA directives; preparing and maintaining security documentation and system security plans; participating in security assessments, reviews, and compliance evaluations; and supporting continuous monitoring and cyber governance activities.
- A 40-hour work week is scheduled utilizing various schedules (5/8s, 4/10s, or 9/80s). Overtime may be required at the discretion of the Manager.
- Travel cannot take place until approved via a fully funded requisition. All rates are fully burdened and should include all costs outside of direct business travel. Reimbursement is not provided for travel to conferences or trainings.
