This position is essential to the daily operations of The Hawken. Our first and most important job is safety. Whether it is ensuring a road is clear of snow for emergency access or maintaining utility systems, this role ensures everyone is in a secure, functional, and hazard-free environment.

Position Overview
This position is for a dedicated and resourceful Caretaker to manage and protect The Hawken. This is a highly autonomous role that requires a "jack-of-all-trades" skill set and a proactive mindset. Because the integrity of the property depends on constant oversight and rapid response, this position is required to live onsite, with housing provided as a core part of the role.
The Caretaker is responsible for the year-round operational integrity of the property, from heavy winter snow management to summer fire mitigation. This role serves as the primary point of contact for contractors and acts as a key representative of Hugo Wyoming Management to the USFS and neighboring landowners. In this role, dedication ensures that safety, property stewardship, and professional community relations happen every single day.
Key Responsibilities
- Uphold the highest safety standards across The Hawken by conducting regular safety inspections and addressing hazards immediately.
- Ensure all maintenance activities comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Consistently utilize and maintain the correct PPE for the task at hand (e.g., eye/ear protection for grounds work, safety harnesses for lift maintenance, and high-visibility gear for snow removal.)
- Access Maintenance: Manage snow removal for roads, trails, and building perimeters to ensure constant accessibility. Maintain snow removal from building roofs as needed.
- Equipment Operation: Safely operate and maintain specialized winter machinery including snowmobiles, side-by-sides, and trucks.
- Building Systems: Manage the seasonal shutdown and startup of utility systems to prevent freeze-ups or damage.
- Water Systems: Regularly test and maintain the property’s water system to ensure compliance and safety standards are met.
- Fuel Management: Monitor and replenish fuel tanks (propane, diesel, gasoline) to ensure uninterrupted power and heat.
- Vehicle Care: Perform routine maintenance and inspections on all property-owned vehicles and small engines.
- Contractor Liaison: Keep the property open, accessible, and organized for the General Contractor and subcontractors working on development projects.
- Site Security: Monitor the property for unauthorized access and ensure all buildings are secure.
- Logistics: Coordinate deliveries and site visits in a remote environment.
- Land Management: Execute summer mowing and brush clearing to maintain defensible space and reduce fire danger.
- External Liaison: Work closely with the US Forest Service (USFS) and act as a helpful, professional neighbor to surrounding landowners.
- Brand Ambassadorship: Represent Hugo Wyoming Management in a positive, professional light at all times.
Qualifications
- Onsite Residency: Ability and willingness to live onsite year-round at The Renegade.
- Mechanical Aptitude: Experience maintaining and operating heavy machinery.
- Problem Solving: Highly resourceful with the ability to troubleshoot utility issues in a remote setting.
- Physical Stamina: Capable of performing strenuous outdoor labor in extreme weather conditions (heavy lifting, shoveling, and hiking).
- Communication: Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with the USFS, contractors, and neighbors.
- Valid Driver’s License: Required for traveling between the three property sites.
- Insurable: Must be insurable under Hugo Wyoming Management vehicle policies.
- Previous experience in estate caretaking, ranch management, or remote facility maintenance.
- Knowledge of rural water systems and utility management.
- Wildland fire safety or forestry experience.
