What are the responsibilities and job description for the Painter Helper position at HUG Construction?
Job description:
Overview
We are seeking a reliable and motivated Painter Helper to join our residential construction and renovation team. In this role, you will work alongside experienced painters to prepare and finish homes, from new construction to remodels. You'll learn proper surface preparation, coating application, and jobsite safety while supporting crews in delivering clean, durable finishes. This is a great opportunity for someone starting in the trades who wants hands-on training and a path toward journeyman-level work.
Responsibilities
- Assist with surface preparation by cleaning, sanding, scraping, patching nail holes, caulking, and applying primer.
- Mask and protect floors, windows, fixtures, trim, and furniture with drop cloths, painter's tape, and plastic sheeting.
- Apply paint using brushes and rollers, and learn airless and conventional spray techniques under the direction of senior painters.
- Set up, move, and safely use ladders, scaffolding, and other access equipment to reach high or difficult areas.
- Mix, stir, and transfer paint and coatings, and help with basic color matching and checking finishes for consistency.
- Assist with minor renovation tasks such as light drywall patching, trim prep, and caulking joints as needed.
- Follow all safety rules, including wearing respiratory protection, gloves, and eye protection, and handling materials properly.
- Load, unload, and transport paint, tools, and supplies to and from the jobsite.
- Keep the work area clean by properly storing tools, cleaning brushes and equipment, and disposing of waste materials according to safety standards.
- Follow instructions from lead painters and supervisors and take direction on technique and quality standards.
Skills
- Some experience in painting, construction, or general labor is helpful, but we are willing to train motivated beginners.
- Basic familiarity with brushes, rollers, sanders, scrapers, and hand tools.
- Willingness to learn spray equipment and proper surface preparation methods.
- Ability to read and follow simple instructions, measurements, and work orders.
- Basic math skills for measuring areas and estimating material quantities.
- Good eye for detail and neat, careful work habits.
- Comfortable working on ladders and scaffolding and standing, bending, and lifting up to 50 lbs throughout the day.
- Understanding of, or willingness to learn, residential jobsite safety practices, including respiratory protection.
- Dependable, punctual, and able to work well as part of a team.
- Reliable transportation to jobsites preferred. Valid driver's license a plus.
