The Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Nurse is responsible for directing patient care for designated shifts. Will report to the Clinical Manager and will work with related departments on ensuring that patient care issues are addressed during the designated shift. The staffing of the Center is based on a teamwork concept. Employees may be cross trained in other clinical areas and may be expected to perform duties other than their normal ones as staffing and patient needs change.

 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

 

  • Promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
  • Following Center policies and procedures; standards of care set by state board of nursing, and state Nurse Practice Act and other governing agency regulations.
  • Adhering to principles of Universal Precautions. Maintains confidentiality of patient and Center related business.
  • Performs all responsibilities/duties required by the cardiac catheterization laboratory division as defined in the scope of service, to assure that the unique nature of the client is addressed.
  • Properly demonstrates the ability to care for the patient undergoing cardiac catheterization including insertion, monitoring, interpretation, and care of the catheter.
  • Demonstrates the ability to care for the patient with continuous cardiac monitoring including rhythm identification, interpretation, and follow through with appropriate intervention.
  • Maintains good sterile technique throughout the procedure by diligent observation, instruction, and supervision in the use of sterile technique.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of the technical aspects of the lab, e.g., proper maintenance of equipment, interpretation of data, cine processing, etc.
  • Provides consultative services regarding cardiac catheterization to nursing staff.
  • Demonstrates the ability to care for the patient with a temporary pacemaker including insertion, monitoring, interpretation of rhythm, and care of the catheter.
  • Assists the physician performing the cardiac catheterization. Acts as a scrub/circulating nurse during the intraoperative phase.
  • Checks for availability and proper condition of necessary instruments, supplies, and equipment.
  • Ensures safe transfer/transport of patient to and from operating room.
  • Assists staff nurses in their evaluation and assessment of patient needs and in direct patient care.
  • Manages scheduling of patient appointments and receives a report from the previous shift of on all patients and identifies special patient care needs. Adjusts patient assignments to meet special needs.
  • Makes patient rounds and notes problems for follow-up. Makes nursing assignments for the next day.
  • Assesses and diagnoses patient and family needs to provide quality care to assigned patients.
  • Develops, discusses, and communicates a realistic problem list (plan of care) for each patient, in collaboration with each patient/family/significant other to address all identified needs.
  • Accepts accountability for clinical care of assigned patients including supervision of nonprofessional personnel.
  • Evaluates and notes the patient's response to nursing care defined in the nursing care plan and medical records.
  • Demonstrates the ability to titrate intravenous medications according to the patient's hemodynamic status Discharge plan accurately reflects patient and/or significant other’s ability to manage care after discharge.  Referrals are made based on identified needs.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of hospital policies and procedures for administering, transcribing, and recording medications. Prepares, documents, and administers medications safely and correctly. Inventories medications at the beginning and end of the shift; notifies supervisor of discrepancies.
  • Maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team, to ensure quality care.
  • Demonstrates dependability/flexibility in meeting scheduling needs of the department.
  • Demonstrates respect and regard for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and fellow employees to ensure a professional, responsible, and courteous environment.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
Qualifications:
  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current registered nurse licensure in state of employment.
  • Two (2) years perioperative services experience and/or training, critical care preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Certified Nurse, Operating Room (CNOR) certification, preferred.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, preferred.
