Summary: The Elementary Teacher helps educate, challenge, and inspire all learners to become contributing, responsible members of a global society
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Teaches reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art and health to pupils in a classroom, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities
- Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provided individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil
- Translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction
- Establish and maintain standard of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom
- Evaluates pupils’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports
- Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupil’s progress and interpret the school program
- Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing helping pupils solve health, attitude and learning problems
- Creates an effective environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards and interest centers
- Maintains professional competence through staff development activities provided by the district and self-selected professional growth activities
- Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records
- Supervises pupils in and out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday
- Administers group-standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs
- Participates in curriculum development programs as required
- Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of pupil activities

Education and/or Experience:
Required:
- BA/BS degree from a college or university
- Valid Michigan Elementary Teaching Certificate
Preferred:
- Additional training and/or education
Language Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret communication including emails, letters, spreadsheet and forms Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from the community, regulatory agencies or staff members
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to calculate basic mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; determine percentages and decimals; spatial aptitude to inspect length and weight of objects
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
