What are the responsibilities and job description for the Part-time Church Sexton position at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church?
PURPOSE: The Sexton will be responsible for facility set-up, building maintenance, and groundskeeping for Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church and Preschool.
PART TIME/ HOURLY / NON-EXEMPT EMPLOYEE [6-10 hours/week - This job schedule will vary and be flexible]
REPORTS TO: Church Business Manager
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Set up tables and chairs for meetings, funerals, rehearsals, weddings, receptions, meals and other various events as needed. Follow verbal and/or written set up instructions given by Hudson Staff or relevant members.
B. Perform general maintenance and repairs, notifying Administrative Coordinator when expertise beyond the sexton’s capabilities is required. Jobs might include but are not limited to simple plumbing fixes, changing light bulbs, HVAC resets, light pruning, and similar handyman projects.
C. Ensure adequate tools and supplies are on hand to perform duties. Communicate with the Administrative Coordinator about needs and assistance with purchasing.
D. Know which vendors we use for various repairs and assist the Administrative Coordinator with service calls.
E. Be familiar with all church facilities and grounds, including the location of electrical breaker boxes, fire alarm control box and panel, elevator room, all mechanical rooms and their contents, sound system equipment, and electric and water meters.
F. Weekly inspections of playgrounds, labyrinths, lots, and Memorial Garden; keep all grounds free of debris and litter.
G. Manage banner set up and maintenance of Six Forks display.
H. Organize/maintain storage spaces
I. Stay in close communication with the church and preschool offices to ensure quick response to needs and emergencies.
J. Update Sexton timesheet at the beginning and end of each shift.
K. Check the job request list at the beginning of each shift.
L. Update property management log after jobs are complete.
M. Attend staff meetings, as requested.
N. Maintain an appropriate appearance while on duty.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Understand standard requirements and safety practices in light maintenance, plumbing, electrical, and carpentry
- Demonstrate skill in the use of power tools and personal hand tools (i.e., hammer, screwdriver, pliers, wrench, cutter, etc.)
- Follow instruction and work independently
- Manage multiple projects at once and meet deadlines
- Lift and carry loads up to 50 lbs (i.e., chairs and folding tables) and use a ladder
- Walk, climb, bend, reach, kneel, squat, stoop, crawl
- Flexible work schedule
- Interpersonal and collaborative skills, including ability to work well with staff, committee members, volunteers, and others with effective communication
