Position Overview
The Multi-Family Property Accounting Manager oversees all financial operations for a portfolio of multi-family residential properties. This role ensures accurate reporting, compliance with accounting standards, timely financial statements, and effective coordination with property management teams. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, highly organized, and experienced in real estate or property management accounting.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all accounting functions for assigned multi-family properties, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and general ledger oversight.
- Prepare and review financial reporting:
- Monthly property reporting
- Quarterly investor and financial institution reporting
- Annual investor, tax, and financial institution reporting
- Ensure accuracy of escrow analysis, including reserves, tax and insurance escrow reconciliations.
- Monitor budget and cash flow reports.
Team Leadership
- Manage and mentor property accountants; provide training and support for accounting procedures and software use.
- Coordinate workflow to ensure timely closings and reporting across the portfolio.
Compliance & Controls
- Ensure adherence to GAAP and IRS reporting standards.
- Report and disclose in accordance with internal accounting policies.
- Work closely with tax professionals, preparing documentation and facilitating the tax return processes.
- Implement and refine internal controls to maintain accurate, secure financial data.
- Review and report on debt covenant requirements and compliance.
Property Operations Support
- Partner with property managers and regional managers to resolve accounting issues and support operational decisions.
- Oversee tenant ledger accuracy, rent roll integrity, and delinquency management.
- Review and approve vendor contracts and invoices for accuracy and compliance.
Systems & Process Improvement
- Utilize property management and accounting software (Yardi) to streamline processes.
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, accuracy, and reporting capabilities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in property or real estate accounting preferred.
- Prior experience managing property accountants or accounting teams strongly preferred.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and real estate financial reporting.
- Proficiency in property management accounting systems (Yardi, RealPage, etc.).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple deadlines.
Preferred Skills
- CPA or CMA certification (preferred but not required).
- Experience with multi-family portfolios of varying sizes and structures.
- Advanced Excel skills, including financial modeling and reporting automation.
Work Environment
- Full-time position with standard business hours; additional time may be required during monthly or annual closing periods, 100% remote.
