Automotive Mechanic
General Statement of Duties: Makes skilled repairs and adjustments to automotive and maintenance equipment and machinery; does related work as required.
Distinguishing Features of The Class: This skilled work involves responsibility for the overhaul and repair of a wide variety of automotive and maintenance equipment at times, including heavy-duty equipment such as bulldozers and pay loaders. The work requires a thorough knowledge of the trade. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be performed, but considerable leeway is permitted in planning the details of each assignment.
Examples of work:
- Makes skilled repairs to gasoline and diesel motor equipment, including trucks, tractors, mowers, bulldozers, wheel loaders, waste/recycling equipment, etc.
- Repairs or replaces motor pumps, fuel pumps, generators, fuel injectors, injection pumps, carburetors, shock absorbers, etc.
- Assists in a variety of tasks in regard to the upkeep, such as cleaning, washing windows and scrubbing floors.
- Repairs or replaces hydraulic pumps, motors, cylinders, valves, valve bodies, hoses, etc.
- Repairs ignition systems, transmissions, brake systems, clutches, front and rear axles.
- Prepares maintenance equipment for painting by sanding, washing, and applying paint.
- Replaces defective fuses and lightbulbs.
- Makes welding repairs to automotive and maintenance equipment.
- Greases vehicles and equipment, changes oil and filters.
- Helps to clean and maintain tools, machinery, and other mechanical equipment.
- Tunes engine, sets the timing, makes related adjustments.
- Attaches and removes snow plow blades and other auxiliary equipment.
- Assists in removing snow and ice from walks, parking lots, and pathways.
- Works as a motor equipment operator when directed.
Job Qualifications
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES : Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and of the terminology and tools of the trade; demonstrated ability to make difficult repairs to heavy automotive and other maintenance equipment; familiarity with welding techniques, ability to work from manuals, plans and specifications and to follow rough draft sketches and oral instructions; good motor and hand and eye coordination; manual dexterity; good physical condition.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE IN TRAINING : Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma and one year of experience as a skilled automotive repairer; or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Eligibility for an appropriate Class New York State Driver’s License at time of application. Possession of License at time of Appointment
