Job Title: School Counselor
Supervisor: Director of Student Support Services
Pay Grade: Teacher
Terms of Employment: 200 - 230 days
Job Summary:
To guide and implement programs that promote successful elementary school experiences and support students’ academic, social, and emotional growth.
Essential Duties:
- Supports students in developing self-awareness, confidence, and positive relationships by providing age-appropriate individual counseling, small group support, and classroom guidance lessons focused on social-emotional learning and skill development.
- Helps students recognize their strengths, interests, and abilities through classroom activities, observations, assessment data, and collaboration with teachers and families to support academic and personal growth.
- Assists students in building problem-solving, conflict resolution, self-regulation, and decision-making skills that contribute to a safe, positive, and inclusive school environment.
- Collaborates with teachers, administrators, families, and support staff to identify and address students’ academic, behavioral, social, and emotional needs through appropriate interventions and support plans.
- Promotes a positive school climate by helping communicate the school’s programs, expectations, and student support services to students, families, and the school community.
- Provides classroom guidance lessons and school-wide activities that support character education, career awareness, bullying prevention, emotional wellness, and academic success.
- Facilitates age-appropriate career awareness and exploration opportunities that introduce students to future learning, goal setting, and a variety of careers through engaging activities and programs.
- Consults and collaborates with community agencies and organizations to connect students and families with resources and services that support student well-being and success.
- Maintains accurate and confidential student records, including documentation related to counseling services, academic progress, attendance, and student support interventions in accordance with division policies and regulations.
- Participates in school committees, student support teams, parent conferences, and professional development activities to support the overall mission of the school counseling program.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the principal.
Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications:
A postgraduate professional license with an endorsement as a school counselor is required. Teaching experience, especially at the elementary school level, is preferred. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the School Board or Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable. Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
