H.T. Lyons, an HVAC mechanical contractor, is looking for a Controls Technician – Building Automation Systems (BAS) to be responsible for executing field-based service, startup, and troubleshooting activities for HVAC control systems and building automation platforms. This role serves as the front-line technical resource, ensuring systems are installed, commissioned, and maintained to operate reliably, efficiently, and in accordance with design intent. This is a collective bargaining (union) position. Assistance with organizing will be provided for qualified applicants as needed.
Essential Job Functions:
Startup & Commissioning
- Perform point-to-point checkout of control devices (sensors, actuators, controllers)
- Load controller configurations and verify proper system operation
- Assist in system startup and functional testing
- Complete commissioning documentation
Troubleshooting & Service
- Diagnose and repair BAS and HVAC control issues, including:
- Device failures (sensors, actuators, controllers)
- Communication/network issues (BACnet, IP, etc.)
- Sequence and operational issues
- Respond to service calls, warranty items, and emergency requests
Controls Service
- Perform scheduled controls service tasks, including:
- Calibration and verification of field devices
- Alarm checks and system performance review
- Inspection of control components and systems
- Identify deficiencies and recommend corrective actions
- Support service control retrofit work, including field installation assistance, device replacement, checkout, startup support, and coordination with Controls Specialists
System Adjustments & Programming Support
- Perform basic programming modifications under guidance of Controls Specialists
- Adjust setpoints, schedules, and sequences as required
- Support system optimization and performance improvements
Documentation & Reporting
- Complete and maintain accurate:
- Work orders and time reporting
- Service reports and findings
- As-built documentation updates
- Ensure all service activities are properly documented for customer and internal use
Customer Interaction
- Communicate clearly with customers regarding:
- System issues and resolutions
- Recommended repairs or improvements
- Provide basic system orientation or guidance when required
- Support identification of service opportunities (repairs, upgrades)
Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures
- Ensure work meets:
- Project specifications
- Company QA/QC standards
- Applicable codes and industry standards
Qualifications:
- 5 years of experience in BAS / Controls / HVAC systems
- Technical training or degree in HVAC, controls, or related field
- Working knowledge of:
- HVAC systems (AHUs, VAVs, chillers, boilers)
- BAS platforms (Niagara, Metasys, Distech, etc.)
- DDC controls and control theory
- Ability to read and interpret both control drawings and wiring diagrams
- BACnet/IP networking and integration
- Commissioning and startup processes
- Familiarity with controls software tools and commissioning platforms
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within service region (Northeastern & Southeastern PA)
